So I'm looking at getting an XPS 1530. Should I wait for an LED screen to be made available, and what about Penryn?

Does anyone have any idea when LED screens and/or Penryn may be available for the XPS 1530?

Give me a reason why you would need LED or a Penryn. If you need a laptop now, get it now. If you're not in a rush, then wait. I was going to wait for the Penryn since it's only a month, but I need it before school starts so it's not worth the wait. Perfermance will be similar to what is already out.

LED? That's useless in my opinion. Just another way to make more money for Dell.

Well, I'm in no rush, so the increased power efficiency of an LED screen and Penryn processor, along with the performance boost of the Penryn would be worth a reasonable wait IMO. Also, I don't want a higher resolution, just LED tech. I would just like to know how long the wait may be, so that I can make some kind of informed decision.

i asked about the resolution today through XPS sales and they said it could be in january or alot longer. I would guess probably middle or late January or longer for LED option (This is my opinion)

Well, I want the standard WXGA (1200x800) resolution. I wonder if they will offer an LED screen in that res?

I think they will but I wished they had these options when I ordered early monday

1440x900 with LED would have been nice :)

I don't think Dell will be offering the LED display on the XPS 1530. Maybe on the XPS 1550 next year?

No. The only LED backlit display for Dell XPS M1530 will be15.4-inch WXGA+ TrueLife (1440x900). It would be available between January to March 2008. I heard that the higher resolution display available in UK is LED backlit. I am waiting for a confirmation. If it is true, then the same will be available in US before the end of January 2008.

    Update:
The 15.4-inch WXGA+ TrueLife (1440x900) screen is available for order (with delayed delivery) in the UK:

and probably most of Europe, but is not available online in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong or USA yet. Apparently, it can ordered by phone, in the USA at least.

    hi,

how u guys differentiate the ccfl from led backlit? is it by the resolution?

    1200x800 - ccfl
    1440x900&above = LED??

I m in asia region and i m going to buy the xps 1530 from dell singapore. But so far the option is very limited like the processor they only let u choose between 7250 and 7700 and resolution only 1200x800 and nothing else.

since u guys cfm that there will be changes between january to march 2008. i wonder if it is the same for asia region for those changes.

Sorry for my noobish qs. i m new to notebook tech.

No, it is expected that the 1440x900 may be either LED or CCFL. In the US, the LED M1330 is distinguishable because the option says "LED" UPDATE and "VGA webcam" while the other option says "Standard" and "2.0 Megapixel webcam."
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DYCWTG2&s=dhs

    According to Wikipedia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#TN_.2B_film
TFL screens may have either CCFL or LED backlighting. I wouldn't be surprised if all Dell laptop displays are TFL; so TFL is not very helpful. However, the fact that one option at:
    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=N4XXPS01&l=en&oc=N12X5302&rbc=N12X5302&s=dhs
explicitly says CCFL while the other ambiguously says TFL has led at least one observer to wonder whether it really means LED.

I would expect that the changes will come to the Asia region around the same time. For example, the Dell Japan site already offers a higher resolution M1530 at:

    http://configure.apj.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=jp&cs=jpdhs1&l=ja&oc=3042BPlemiumPKG&s=dhs

However, it is possible that smaller countries may have fewer configuration options.

LED backlighting has a brighter screen and saves more energy than the normal lcd ones...

does anybody know how much this will cost for an upgrade?

    High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LED LCD (1440x900) & 2.0 M [add $150]

It is available. I wonder if this is LG screen or what and how good it is compare to samsucks. Anyone with first hand experience would like to chime in and enlighten us?

My advice would be not to make a blanket statement about Samsung screens.
There is a high possibility you may be wrong.

On the 1330, Samsung LED screens have become available and they have been rated very highly. Some say the best of all 3 that have been available (Chi-Mei, Toshiba and Samsung)

I think the bad reputation was from the CCFL Samsung screens - the LED screens may be a completely different animal.
