just got another 1530 it arrived about half an hour or so
Just putting XP onto it using the nlite customised XP disk
Question is i got a X9000 cpu kicking about.
Shall i put it in or not ??
any pros / cons
You may already know i upgraded another one of my 1530s to a pentrn couple of weeks ago and thats running PERFECT![]()
I was just thinking is the x9000 too hardcore for the 1530 ? it may not even work
-
technically its compatable. as the 1530 is made to take a socket p chip up to core 2 duo. (maybe it could work with quad, if they bring out a p socket one)
however the bios might not like it.
my advice is upgrade to the latest bios and then give it a try.as far as i know the worst that could happen is it will reject it and not boot with it in. just make sure you get all the cooling hooked up well!
edit: having looked at dells website id say it should be able to run fine so long as the bios sees it.
the highest prosessor you can get now is the T9500 and this is just a 2.6ghz version of the 2.8ghz X9000.
so as long as you cool it well (as5 ect...) you shouldnt damage anything. -
You could try and technically it should work, but the X9000 has a higher TDP than the standard Core 2 Duos (44w vs 35w), so the laptop may not be able to cope with the extra heat.
But by all means try it if you have one laying around. -
I actually thought about doing this myself. Let us know how it turns out.
-
yeha will do thanks for the input
Debating whether to video it or not -
Of cource you should vid it for me
-
yeah guess i could make one
depends how many of you punks pre rep me -
Where are the guides posted on how to swap out your processor for the 1530? I remember seeing one awhile back.. but cannot seem to find it now.
-
I think the service manual is on page 1 of the official 1530 owners lounge thread.
flip the laptop over
Remove battery
Remove panel that should be on your top right i think its 6 screws
Take off the panel remove cooler , it hink 7 screws
Unplug fan
undo CPU locking screw
take out CPU
replace new CPU with sliver of thermal paste , i only put a gnats **** on mine and its same temp as when it came from dell with original CPU
replace everything you took out ,
job done
Oh and make sure your running latest bios
A08 -
Yeesh, all that work (and cash) for a small performance boost. You guys are nuts!
-
its not a big job at all
5 mins MAX -
So i just done it in my lunch hour
took me as said before 5 mins MAX.
my battery life has gone up to 4h 20 mins so notebook hardware control tells me
CPU temp at idle on batt 43degrees
so far so good
Bios 08 recognised it imediately.
If any of you guys want me to run any tests let me know
Cheers
Oh heres a screen grab for those who care

pro: slightly faster.
main con: voiding warranty, unless if something goes wrong you swap back in the one you had beforehand..
though if you've got it banging about and it's not being used anywhere, why not?
are you going to let it run at base 2.8ghz, or are you going to OC it? -
not sure yet , will see about OC it
Not sure how to do it to be honest as nothing comes up in bios RE overclocking
Regarding warranty i got the old CPU ill just stick it back in if there was ever a problem , theres no warranty seals or anything so should be ok -
So it works! Nice. And I see you're running XP on there. Any more observations on the performance/heat while running applications, games, etc? I'm curious as to why the battery life went up. Was the old cpu a merom? Even so, that seems odd.
-
it's more energy efficient, and maybe running on a lower multiplier whilst doing the same work as the older processor is what results in the battery life discrepancy? or something along those lines.. i wouldn't necessarily trust the battery life monitor myself anyway..
overclocking the x9000 on a 1730 is done through the bios, perhaps the 1530 bios is slightly different? as far as i'm aware, you can't normally purchase a x9000 for the 1530, so maybe they left it out?
seems a shame having unlocked multipliers if they aren't accesible xD -
been on and off all afternoon
not had any problems at all and yeah i think these use less power so = more battery
small gain but worth having
RE overclocking there is no option in the bios
still im happy to have this installed as it is -
very, very nice!!!
-
it uses more power so it takes more battery life.. you should let it run off the battery to see if the 4 plus hours is accurate. are you using a 6 cell or 9 cell battery? another question, i noticed you have SP3 of windows XP... i thought ti wasnt out yet?
-
Does the M1330 use the same socket for the CPU??
Also where did you get the X9000 from - eBay? -
yeah i think the 1330 uses same slot
CPU got a mate at intel
XPS 1530 - X9000 Shall I Install Or Not ??
