    Hey there,

So I have a Dell XPS 1530 with a 1680 x 1050 screen--and this works fine in Vista--but when I play games (Hitman, Doom 3, SWAT 4, etc) I am not able to play them at any resolution higher than 1280--why is this??

I had this problem with LOTRO but not WOW. For lotro I had to switch to window mode and change resolution. Once resolution set to 1680 X 1050 in window mode I changed fullscreen resolution to 1680 x 1050. Also make sure drivers are up to date. I'm running 64-bit Vista Ultimate and downloaded drivers directly from NVIDIA's site. Once it ex tract's and fails open of device manager and update drivers manually specifying have disk.

    Hope this helps.

What video card do you have and where did you get the drivers for it?

Also please check in the display tab in control panel as to how big your desktop resolution can be. If it stops at 1280 please say that. Don't assume that it will be 1680x1050, actually try it. You *may* have gotten a lower resolution screen by mistake.

    1280x what, exactly?

my guess is it's something to do with the aspect ratio - 1680x1050 is 16:10, and most games only like outputting in standard 4:3 (ie non-widescreen) resolutions.

    eg: 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc...

    and not 1280x800, 1680x1050, etc...

Wait, do you mean you don't have the option, or do you mean they don't run well?

Thanks for all the replies. I mean that when I set the game to 1680 x 1020 then go to play, the option will automatically revert to 1280 x whatever. This happens in all the games. So in other words, the option is there but it will not let it happen. My windows update says that all my drivers are there but I don't know if that includes all the specific nvidia ones.

Also I definitely have a 1680 screen--is it right there in the nVidia controls--I also just ordered this computer about a month ago so it should certainly at least RUN the games in that mode, if even at a slower rate. Especially since a lot of these games were made 3+ years ago.

Then force the resolution with RivaTuner...always worked for me...even for Battlefield 2
