    Hi,

I just recieved my new notebook yesterday and tested out a dvd movie in the drive. I noticed that the dvd/rw drive gets really loud and I can feel pretty intense vibration on the entire system. I know that some noise/vibration is normal but how do i know if my drive is defected?

Also, did any of you purchase the Norton Internet security with it? I was not able to get the updates to work properly.

    Please help!! Thank you!

Does it do this with all DVDs? Sometimes a particular DVD may cause vibration. I don't use Norton.

I had this happen with one particular DVD in one particular case. Has not happened again with any other disc or even with the same disc on other occasions. I think it might have to do with the disc not being properly seeded in the slot-loading drive or osmething.

I had loud vibrations with one particular CDR in my first M1530. It sounded like a plane taking off. The maker of the drive was Optiarc.

My replacement M1530 plays the same disc just fine. The maker of this drive is Teac.

Check the maker of yours via the Device Manager.

My drive that was making the noise is an Optiarc as well. However, I am not sure if I wish to play the monitor lottery all over again when the DVD drive has been working fine with the exception of one time with one disc. Would this still be covered by the warranty if I do not do anything and it becomes more frequent after my 21 days are up?

You do have an option to just have the drive replaced under warranty, if that's what you wish. That being said, you likely want a tech to do that replacement.

I agree with you that avoiding the screen lottery is a good idea.

I had an optiarc in my brand new 1525 and it vibrated like crazy on every disk I put in it. I had it replaced with no fuss from dell and its all good now, and I love my laptop.

I like vista too, noticeable improvements from xp. I had some races between the laptop and my xp desktop (Pentium 4 2.8Ghz) which performs great itself, and the laptop won hands down. Yes different hardware I know but still ... faster is faster.

Thanks for the responses. Was able to get Norton to work last night! My notebook came with LG screen and Teac optical drive. I, too, does not want to play the lottery for bad screen. So now the question is about the drive, how much vibration do you all get when playing dvd in the drive? I put a cup of water on the palm rest and the water ripples are very clear.

You didn't answer the question about whether the problem exists with all DVDs or just one (or two). I have a TEAC drive, and occasionally a particular DVD spinning at high rpm will cause more vibration, but most of the time the drive is fairly quiet.

I had the same issue with my Optiarc drive. It was replaced with a TEAC and the issue has disappeared. The tech also noted that it was probably not fastened tightly to the chassis, which may have resulted in the vibration noise. I also found that this only occured during fast spins, and not while watching a DVD.
