I'm considering buying one of these two laptops, but I'm not sure which is better. My main question is if both laptops are configured to have the same specs for processor, RAM and video card, will there be any difference in performance of games? And is one better than the other in general, or are they basically the same?

Performance wise, they will be the same if they both have the same configuration. The XPS would probably have a better build quality, and it is definitely more sleeker than the inspirons.

The m1530 also has a slightly superior video card, providing GDDR3 memory as opposed to GDDR2 like in the inspiron.I went for the XPS, and im not sure how much more performance GDDR3 gives....I just know its more :p

    XPS 1530:

Has DDR3 memory instead of the Inspiron 1520's DDR2, so game performance will be noticable faster.
A few pounds lighter, 5.9lbs with the 6-cell and a bit over 6 with the 9-cell.

    Inspiron 1520:

Has 4 USB ports, instead of 3.
    A lot cheaper.

The M1530 is much faster than the 1520, as it uses the DDR3 version of the 8600M GT. The M1530 gets 4300 3DMark06 point, versus about 3200 for the 1520.

If you can afford it, go with the XPS 1530.

Yeah, I saw that in a review. But I'm not completely sure what those numbers mean in terms of game performance. Does anyone know what the difference in FPS would be between the two video cards for a current game?

with a 30% increase in score, the fps rate increase should be about the same (25-35%?). it also depends on the game and how much memory bandwidth it needs.
