I understand that if you want to use your XPS laptop as a gaming platform the 8600M GT is what you want, however, I am not planning on using my laptop for gaming, and intensive/complicated CAD applications. I want to enjoy smooth and very good quality DVD playback, HD content playing/streaming, etc.
Is 8400M GS suited for the job? Or should've I built my system with a more powerful 8600M GT?

8400 Should suit your needs. If your planning on streaming HD content go for a T7500 or higher.
