    Hi all,

In the process of buying a new laptop and was hoping for some pointers/opinions over whether it is worth getting an XPS 17 as opposed to an Inspiron 17R?

I am a web developer so will mostly be using it for this purpose - so needs to run a number of programmes (including Photoshop) at the same time with little reduction in performance. I also want it to last - so buying more than I currently need is an option.

I am looking at a Dell Inspiron 17R Core I3 processor, 4gb ram, 1gb ati video card versus XPS 17, core I5 processor, 4gb ram, 1gb NVIDIA video card.

Would be interested in your thoughts

    thanks in advance

If you're just looking for a 17" laptop for web dev and photoshop, check out the Sager NP5170.
Sager NP5170 Custom Laptop (Built on the Clevo W170HN)
It has a higher resolution display (1920x1080 / FHD / 1080p) versus the 1600x900 / HD+ / 900p on the laptops you mentioned. To get 1080p on the XPS 17, you'd have to select the 3D edition of the laptop and lose optimus (battery-saving switchable graphics) support.

High-resolution displays are really useful for web development when it comes to coding (viewing more lines of code on the screen), and they're really useful for photoshop when it comes to displaying larger images without zooming out.

You could also check out the Dell Precision M6500 if you want a really nice 17" 16:10 1920x1200 laptop (but you have to choose the WUXGA WLED or WUXGA RGBLED display for it to have a decent display)
The new Dell Precision M6600 coming out won't be 16:10 though.

Also, if the only thing you're looking for in 17" versus 15" is the increase in viewable content area, check out the Dell XPS 15. It offers a very nice B+RGLED 1080p display (you have to select the option under the Adjust Performance tab) that has more display area than the stock displays on the XPS 17 and the Inspiron 17R.
The Sager NP5160 also offers 1080p as an option.

...but if you had to choose from the options you listed, I'd say the XPS 17 with the i5, because i5's have a huge performance advantage over the i3's due to the Turbo Boost. (unless the i3 has a higher base clock speed than the i5's turbo speed, which usually isn't the case)
