My laptop died over here in Iraq, suddenly and violently, so I have to replace the motherboard/video card - I had the dual 2.3 gHz CPU and 7950 video card. A year and a half later the 1730 has come out with a dual 2.8 and dual 8800 GeForce video cards.

My question is simple - can I replace the old motherboard/video card from the 1710 with a top of the line motherboard/dual video card from the 1730?

I'll be back in the States Christmas Eve for a few weeks to get it fixed or buy a new laptop if repairs cost too much.

    Thanks for your help.

Uhh, the upgrade would cost around $1500.
And it's not possible. Might as well get a new laptop.

If your laptop is under warranty, than maybe you can get the machine serviced. But it sounds like your laptop fell, or something bad happened to it, based on your "sudden and violent words," so whatever happened may void your warranty.

Your XPS1710 has the highest end components installed in it. The T7600 2.33Ghz cpu is about a $500 cpu today, and its the fastest of the socket M processors. The 7950GTX is also the best gpu the 1710 can handle. They go for about $400. The motherboard is probably in the range of $300.
So what I suggest is, parting your system out and selling the pieces which work.
If the screen is still good, you can probably get $200 for it.
If the T7600 works, you can get $400 for it

Then use the money to fund a new laptop.

The 1730 parts will not even fit in your XPS1710, so dont think about installing them.
