Ok, I just downloaded i8kfangui, and it seems that my XPS 9100 laptop (P4 3.4ghz, 1gb ram, radeon 9700) idles at around 68C! Is it just me, or is that outrageously high? I've had this thing for a while now, so I'm thinking it might be ready to put out to pasteur (I'll probably upgrade to an LG S1 or an Asus W3J... Not a Dell, if this is the sort of thing that happens to their notebooks).

68c for what? cpu? gpu? mobo?
68c for a P4 CPU would be OK. They run very hot. Same goes for powerhog video cards (like Radeon 9700). However, a CPU/GPU is designed to work normally up until 90C mark, so 68 degrees is acceptable.

I think the BIOS (at least on newer system) turns fans on only at 78c, so that might explain 68 degrees on your lappie. What if you turn on the CPU/GPU fan on slow?

Intel Core Duo CPUs in newer Dell notebooks (like mine) run much cooler (idling at 44 degrees with CPU fan off right now). GPU temperatures on newer notebooks vary depending on the GPU but even GeForce 7900GS gets cooled fairly quickly to temperatures in low 50's

Leshii: Yep, 68C for the CPU. I had no idea that was an acceptable temp. Funny thing is, it causes my fans to run full blast all the time (they sound like a jet engine). Annoying...

drumfu: Not yet. I guess I probably should at some point...

Definately open up the computer and clean out the dust. I have had my computer for less than a year and it had accumulated enough dust to completely obstruct the airflow. My Pentium M was idling at 50C which is very high for that processor. And my video card died due to excessive heat caused by a blocked heat sink.

Holy cow... Knocked off 10C just by blowing the dust out with an air compressor. Kind of disappointing, in a way, since now I'll have a harder time justifying a new laptop to myself. ;)
