Quite an improvement indeed. If you are a gamer, I would return that immediately. The card costs $400 to buy seperately, and you won't have much luck selling the 9700 on Ebay. All of the XPS owners will be hawking theres as soon as they get their upgrades. If you return it, you will get second chance to configure things you like, and spend 180 dollars on the better card instead of 400.

Can you return it simply for the reason of wanting an upgrade?

I thought there had to be a defect...

On the other hand how difficult is it to install a new vid card, i know theres directions somewhere but cant find them. Might wait and take that road later when theres more need for the power too, dont wanna send back my precious.. [:I]

As much as I'd like too, this one will have to wait until next year :-( Oh well, with any luck the pricing will go down between now and then!

If it is within 21 days of delivery, you can return it for any reason. It is not difficult to upgrade, you just unscrew a few screws and it lifts out, no soldering involved. The downside is the cost. upgrading afterward costs a lot. If you game, you will appreciate the 2x performance gain the 9800 has over the 9700.

    Get this:

Called dell up and said i wanted to return it because of the vid card, they turned around and offered to pay half the difference themselves toward the new vid card, AND ARE SHIPPING IT UP TO ME TO INSTALL, COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. Now I thought this voided the warranty from what I've read here so I asked them twice, and they said its ok, in fact the new card will be covered also!

I was ready to cry if need be to get less, and it wouldnt be a pretty sight for a 34 yr old. Now I'm crying tears of joy! Thumbs up dell, really kicking that rep for bad service imo [ :D]

Would you mind benchmarking it and then posting the results right here?

    Hammerz,

Did you get it for half price, or half the difference in price? Clarify please :)

    Andrew,

Yes, I've had mine about 10 days so I'm well within the 21 days....

    Cheers,

    John,

For half the difference, as in the cost of the 256Mb radion 9800 - the cost of the 128MB radion 9700 divided by two (so not quite half price but its less than if I had bought it new [8D])

I have to return the 128MB radion when I recieve the new card as well.

    Andrew,

They told me up front that it may take a week or two to get the card up to me, so if you can wait till then I will be happy to benchmark it for you.

after months (feels like years) of reading, researching and waiting, I finally ordered a notebook last tues (jul 27). I was going to go with an Asus model, but ended up going with a dell i9100.

I ordered a p4-3.0HT, 1GB Ram, 128mb ati9700, 60GB 7k2. The very next day I read online that ati had released the 256mb 9800. So I called my Dell rep and asked how much it'd be to upgrade the card. Well, 2 minutes and $300 Cnd later, and I got the 256mb ati9800 upgrade. The only downside is that it ended up delaying the ship date by 2 weeks.

I'd like to thank everyone here on the forums for their insight on purchasing a notebook. I haven't posted many replies, but I've read an awful lot.

Now if I can only find some sort of support group to help me cope with the agonizing 2 week wait. ARRRRRRRRRRRGGG.

ya i just dropped a little over 2 g's on my 9100, got it last week.

I'm rockin a 3.2 ht P4, 1gb ram, 256mb ati 9700, 100gb hd, 4x dvd/cd burner. It cost a pretty penny, but it runs really fast. I try to dabble in video editing and this laptop is running everything great. Is the 9800 that big of a differance from the 256mb 9700??

it's about twice as fast as the 9700 in most cases.

RaGe, I moved your comment to a new topic, it should get more attention there. It's titled "Help with Dell Spare Parts".
