Hi, i was cleaning the LCD this morning with Windex, after cleaning i turned it on and half the screen was dark like normal and the other half was superbright! i figured that i used too much Windex and some of it has gotten in between the glass and the actual LCD, i took the LCD apart and failed to separate the layers of the screen, wot can i do now? I only presume the problem is Windex between the LCD and the glossy glass but i could be wrong, any suggestions?

You shouldn't use windex to clean an LCD screen unless it has a screen protector, but I'm sure you already figured that out.

Ouch...did you spray directly onto the screen? I wonder if it might have gotten in the screen or maybe etched away some of the plastic (I doubt that though).

You won't be able to remove the glossy layer easily; you might end up needing a new LCD. :(

I sprayed onto tissue then wiped the screen gently, after that i used microfiber cloth to clean it, it does look like i etched away some plastic but the surface doesnt look damaged at all, ive cleaned this way before and have been fine until now...

    wow.... you are screwed...
1.Using windex, or any alcohol based product will damage the coatings added to displays.
2.Opening up the laptop will instantly void your warranty... If you didnt open the casing, there was a slight chance on dell replacing the thing for you. Now though, it looks like you'll either have to live with it, or pay to have the display replaced.

    1) Spray cleaner on cotton cloth to dampen.
    2) Wipe screen with dampened cotton cloth.
    3) Wipe screen with dry cotton cloth.

I'd have to say it's time for a new screen.

I opened it up again, this time i went thru the layers behind the glass, there was abour 4-5 layers of plastic between the glass and LCD (i assume these layers of plastic is wot makes it "SuperBright") and wiped all of them dry from the Windex, reassembled and now theres just a small smudge on the top right corner, good enough for me...

This link is too late, but next time remember NOT to use any glass cleaning liquids or any other type of chemicals to clean LCDs if they are not especially made for LCD cleaning. Microfiber or a damp cloth is enough to remove dirt or grease/finger prints off the screen.
BTW if you did a simple search like "Windex LCD" in google you’ll find plenty of pages telling you NOT to use Windex. Next time do a bit of research.

Its alright now, when i have time i will take it apart again and use the hair-dryer for the rest of it, wot a lesson to be learnt...

I didnt bother to seek any warranty on it coz i got the feeling that they'll tell me tough luck and to stick it, also i cannot afford to lose time to do all that as im in a rather rural area of Australia (Cairns) and simply ordering a LCD could take ages...

^^ Hey, IIRC, all the XPS M1210s in the APAC region came with a default 1 year complete cover....

With the complete cover, the Dell reps don't crib much abt replacements

Sorry about your laptop dude... look for a refurb one off ebay to replace the screen.

    ============
Funny, I've been sing windex and alcohol for year, and on my $2K sony t140p and my sony vcg-va10g (both with x-brite screens 10" and 20"), and 20" dell ... , and no problem for at lest a couple of years now and regularly.

unless your dumping alcohol and/windex on it or something,

I spray a couple a shots on a good auto cloth (the velvety ones) and just slowly buff the screen. then buff dry. perfect everytime. DO NOT SPRAY ON SCREEN!.

I do that to tons of customers that come to my store for windows reinstallations. Go for the crappy cheap alcohol an windex impostors .. they probably have less chemical and more water :D Haven't really checked what the alcohol cleaners are made of, but they all smell like alcohol to me :p

Oh, yeah, don't use rain-x.. WILL desolve polymer stuff much faster than alcohol or windex.

Glad to hear it's okay now. I doubt you'll need the hairdryer as it is all dry by now. The thing to check for would be streaks and use a microfiber cloth to remove them.

I thought it was the ammonia in windex that is damaging to LCDs?
