Even undervolted with a constant temp of 48C and no dust in the heatsink the fan rarely if ever turns off. What's going on? It's really starting to bother me and can't be helping battery life.

what are your gpu temps? that could be the cause.

Nice and cool at 53C... Even have it underclocked to save power.

Im not sure who makes this laptop (no Dell does not design or build laptops) but its poor engineering that is causing your issue. They probably used a tiny solo sink to cool the cpu which means the fan must run more to keep it cool. Poor engineering.

You must have missed the part where I said my CPU and GPU hover in the 48-52C range at all times...

you know i wasn't thinking earlier, but your cpu temp isn't really that high. what's the cpu temp under load? and i know this doesn't answer your question about why fan spins all the time but it might give insight.

and you must have missed the part where I said the laptop probably uses tiny solo-sinks hence the fan must run all the time. YES at 48 degrees the C2D based designs WILL have the fan running. Its just a poorly designed cooling solution and they have the fan running constantly to make up for it.

Last year when I first got the laptop it would constantly idle in the 50s and climb to 60+. Once it hit mid 60s the fan would kick in for a short period then shut off once it got back to 45-50. Now it's on nearly 100% of the time. I've had it unplugged for the past 2:30 hours testing my new 9 cell battery that's getting an abysmal 3-3:30 hours of battery life and the fan has been on the whole time!

Yep I blow it out with compressed air monthly, no dust in there.
