so basically they they will have these specs

    2.0 ghz intel centro duo
    1gb ram
    80gb hardrive 72000 rpm
    256mb nvidia graphics card
    9 cell batt

wiht the xps i would get the media av package w/ webcam.

i am trying ot become an engineer, so i figure ild be doing a lot of solidworks and cad. I also enjoy the ocasional gaming. with the deals im getting it, they both come out to about same price.

so which one wiht basically same internals will be better?

d620 will be better for CAD (quadro series is optimized for CAD), D620 is going to be more durable (allegedly), and the M1210 is going to be better for gaming. That said, i run BF2 on my D620 on all high settings with ZERO lag.

(a search would have answered this and it should be moved to "which notebook should i buy?" section!!!)

I own a D620 and would recommend it over the XPS M1210 for engineering applications.

As fizzleation points out, the nVidia Quadro has much better support for engineering applications. Quadro drivers are ISV (independent software vendor) certified, so you can be sure that your CAD stuff displays properly.

The D620 also has options for higher resolution displays (1440x900 I think), while the M1210 only goes up to 1280x800.

Also in favor of the D620 are: (1) Much more solid keyboard (2) point stick device (3) Compatibility with other D series items like optical drives and docking stations.

The M1210's biggest advantage over the D620 is portability. The D620 is a medium sized notebook in the 5 pound range, but it seems pretty large compared to a 12" form factor machine like the M1210.
