I've read about some people who weren't terribly pleased with the noise the drive makes when you boot up or resume from standby on the XPS M1330. So I did some thinking and was able to solve the problem. No more evil glares from people in a quiet environment. ;) I'm surprised no one else has posted this already.

Put a dummy disc (I used a blank DVD) in the drive.

Yep, that's it. Because the noise is due to the insert/eject mechanism and not actually the spin-up of the drive, if you give it a disc, it won't try to suck one in at start-up time. So the noises you're hearing when booting the computer will be gone.

Of course, this doesn't solve the problem when you actually want to insert or eject a disc, but you're probably in a more forgiving environment when you're inserting/ejecting discs.

My noise isnt that bad but doesnt your disk spin on startup (checking if it should boot from there) increasing the startup time??

I guess you could tell it to boot solely fm the hd in setup.

It does spin on startup (I believe it's just the drive initializing, whether it's set to the primary boot device or not) but I've set the HD to boot first, so it doesn't delay the boot process.
