As you all may know, I'll be recieving my XPS M1330 within a couple of weeks. However, lately, I've had concerns over the build quality of the notebook, such as a gap near the hinges, whining CPU, and bad LED screen. Can any of you guys enlighten me on the overall thought of this, and what the chances are of recieving a damaged part?

Why don't you wait until you get the laptop to start worrying.

This has been covered several times before... The majority of people come to these boards to post about their problems and see if there are any solutions. Most of the people that get a perfect laptop don't come here to gloat, so it seems as if the defect rate is very high when in reality it isn't. That being said, I just ordered two m1330's within the last couple of weeks, and neither of them have had any of the common problems that many others here have. Chances are, you will get a perfect one

The best thing for you to do is gather your own first opinion. Reading about all the negative people would have had is approaching it from the wrong side.

You will get the system and look for things wrong with it rather than getting a normal first impression.

I would believe there are several who have come here and totally changed there expectations and enthusiasm after reading the negative.

I have received & M1330s and the worst problem was a small hairline crack in a battery. So....go from there....

If one sees another looking into the sky, they look into the sky. If that person then points out a small object thats really not there, a large number of people will see that object. Its the same with this situation exactly.

there are several who believed their system had a whine when there probably was nothing at all...all because of the discussion regarding the whine.

Check my Dell XPS M1330 - 2008 Version thread. As I mention in my thread the issues M1330 is facing is due to the fault in the design of chasis components and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Flamenko, I have reorganized and reworded my review. It doesn't convey a wrong message anymore.

Ok, thanks for your input. Really, I appreciate it. It's just I have all these concerns, and I know of no other way to tell them other than making a thread about it. Does that make sense?
I'll try and worry less about it though, so thanks.

Look stop beating yourself up there is nothing you can do its out of your hands until you get said item ok.
I came here and 3 other forums and made up my mind to buy one of these M1330, if I had taken note of all bad reports on this unit I would not of gone and taken the jump for one. Mind you this forum out of many I visit has the most negative detail reports on the M1330XPS come to think of it the whole XPS range. My 1st buy was back in Aug 2007 and it was the lowest spe unit at the time, since then we went back for 2 more the latest in Jan 2008.
So from my point of view Iknew what not to look out for (all the bad reports) and only had one small issue with the M1330 the P logo came off this was on the basic unit and Dell shipped me a brand new LCD Lid plus (AS they do not hold the logos they only come on the lids) a 9 cell battery free and a bonus $80 credit refund..Almost forgot we also got a free Dell laptop carrier with the 1st M1330 order.
I say to you once you get hold of you M1330 don't come onto this forum for about a week just play/use your laptop as you would and don't go looking for the so called posted problems members have posted.
Any joy your Pepsi or beer and chill out.
    Best wishes A.D :)

m1330 one week now and noticed no defects. I was nervous buying a Dell at all, but have to say it's a slick machine...I'm impressed. Don't let a vocal minority convince you they are the majority.

Good points in response to your questions - There tends to be a "groupthink" thing that happens with most online forums, where folks can sometimes almost talk themselves into a problem. Don't get too wound up about your new M1330, it will cause you to be over-sensitive or maybe even to the point of looking for problems. The advice to "use it for a week" and then come back here is probably a great suggestion.

You should expect top-quality for your dollar, no doubt - and you should demand that Dell provide that. My experiences today, and my previous experiences with Dell have consistently been that they will work to address your issues. Sure, there are hiccups sometimes, but generally things have resulted ultimately in an outcome that left me somewhere between pleased and OK with the situation. That's hard to complain about!

Just don't let yourself fall into the trap of having the seemingly endless sea of posts "talk you into" a problem with your laptop. If there's an issue, call Dell and it's most likely that they'll either resolve it, credit you back some $$ (if it's just an annoyance) or flat out build you a new one. If not, just return it within the 21 days for a full refund.

Just try to enjoy the fun of a new machine, especially one as cool/portable/powerful as the 1330!

Too bad I'm only 16, LMAO. :D But thanks. I appreciate the help.
I really like this forum, so I doubt I won't go on it at all during the first week I have it; I just won't go looking for problematic threads.

About the hinge gap you refer to - this was never a problem with the M1330.
Originally some machines had what we called a loose left hinge cap. Actually the part in question is not on the hinge but is the silver end cap on the body to the left of the black plastic strip which contains the media controls.
Mine was a little loose... but it turned out to be because the wiring under the black strip or hinge wasn't flat enough and once that was rectified the end cap fitted fine.

Later someone else posted about the hinge gap (with photo). I think they went looking for this loose "hinge cap" and all they found to complain about was the normal gap at the hinge. I don't rate that as a defect at all.
Like the others say - just don't be too critical when the laptop arrives. If it looks good and is fit for purpose and works then that is all you need.
