Hi, I have a fairly new M1330. I've just noticed these strange scratches on the media panel. As far as I can tell, there is no abrasive dust present that would contact the media panel, even when the laptop is closed. Those white fibers you see are just lint from paper towels, not dust. What could be causing this?

I think you still have plastic on it. Take it off.

I agree with Achilles. It does look as though the plastic cover hasn't been peeled off.

Oh, no, the plastic cover's definitely off. In fact, I'm pretty sure there was never a plastic cover on the thing in the first place. It was a replacement shipping, I dunno if they threw me a refurb or something. But yeah, the scratches are definitely directly on the panel.

You see those lint looking things on your panel?

Those are from plastic peeling on the panel. The media pad is very shiny - take the plastic off.

As I said earlier, the fibers are from paper towels and tissues I use for a quick wipe now and then. And there's no plastic on there, I've been scratching at the edges to try and bring up the plastic, if it's there, for the past minute.

    Did you get a reburb?

I would definately ask for a replacement panel if it was not caused by you.

If that panel does not have a plastic peeling, it really doesn't justify the looks of an XPS system.

Last time I had tech come out on my first XPS to replace LCD bezel, a brand new media panel (which I did not ask for) came along w/ the bezel, so I'm thinking it can be easily granted by the XPS support.

I have no clue what you or whoever owned it before you used to wipe it, but don't use stuff like windex on a expensive machine.

The only time I ever wiped it was just now when I noticed the scratches, and that was with water. Agh... I don't want a replacement... This machine is actually the result of my fifth or so replacement request...

Does Dell send over parts, minus the technician? They never call.

Yes they will if you think you can do it.

Hard part would be the convincing them if you can do it yourself.

    It's pretty simple task though.

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsm1330/en/index.htm

    Remember this though.

Dell is out to make profit, and since it's your fith replacement system, I wouldn't be suprised if they don't have some sort of red flag under your service tag.

This doesn't mean you should be treated like crap though. Field tech(third party) not calling you is I think different matter than the support you should get from Dell.

Just call Dell, ask for the part, if you don't end up w/ it, keep calling the third party tech office.

I still think there is still some plastic film on the media panel. If you look closely, there is a different sheen between the middle and the edge. On a M1330, both areas should be just as shiney.

You can request parts only from support. I routinely do that. I jsut recently installed a new palm rest on an older Insp 630m. That necessatated basically taking the whole system apart.

Yes I think it's the peeling too, but what can we do if the OP still says he tried to peel it off lol.

    OP, try this.

Put your nail through the surface, and see if it gets easily scratched.

If so, it is indeed the peeling.

nah, just ask for the media button panel replacement, just say urs is not working. It's a five-minute job to swap it out, and every time 1330 is repaired in the field, techs always bring a spare for it because it's so fragile.

Hmmm... Looking at the pic now, I can easily see why one might think there was film still on it. There is definitely a different color. I guess it's an effect of the light or whatever. That different sheen in the middle is just a huge smear. I can say for certain, there's no film. I guess I'll get them to send me another media panel.

It's also very dull. Should be VERY shiny.
