The palmrest area is not very strong!
I dropped a Sony Ericsson W800 phone onto the palmrest from a height of about an inch this morning, and it left three beautiful dents in the palmrest![]()
So my unmarked/spotless M1530 now has battle scars![]()
-
If the dents are beautiful then what's the problem?
-
Ooch...sucks for you. Call Dell support and see what they can do about it. If you don't really care/don't want dumb techs to touch your lappy, then just deal with it, not too much of a deal anyways...
-
I just dropped my iPhone purposely from about 6 inches on to the palm rest of my m1330 and there's not a scratch. -
-
-
I find it hard to believe too that one inch did that... just how heavy is that phone? -
And who's fault is it dropping something on it? I'm not even goin' to try it on mine! 3 dents from a 1 inch drop? No way!
-
You sure you phone is a Sony Ericsson W800?
The damages you describe would be more likely if you dropped this phone...
-
Hehe...definitely. The phone must be either heavy or MASSIVE, and my vote goes to the latter...
I never knew that Sony makes such massive phones...maybe he dropped from a foot? a typo perhaps?
At any rate, ain't going to try that on my 1530...just got it for 2 weeks, not going to leave it with some ugly dent...not yet at least... -

I can see it now......a new line of clothing.
"I dropped something on my m1330/m1530 and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt!"
-
I must have underestimated the distance but it was definitely less then 4 inches! I'm not sure which way up it landed.
And yes, it is a W800http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/overview/w800i
It is my UK phone
I'll post a pic when I get home.
All three are from the corners of the handset. One is very noticable, one is much less so and the third has kinda disappeared actually.
I'm not going to use the CompleteCare cover for it. I'll wait for a more serious problem and get them fixed at the same time as it isn't worth the hassle.
Just be aware... it isn't all that impact resistant. It was quite a shock especially as I've had it almost 8 weeks now and it is the first mark on it. -
Well, I think your point is well taken by all, as we know the palm rest isn't exactly a heavy sheet of metal and you DO have to exercise some care.
-
i thought the build material was very solid on this machine..how can that happen o.o...and only from 1 inch too o.o
-
I expect the aluminum sheet is only a millimetre or so think and possibly in that particular area (above the hard drive) there might not be much structure underneath to support it as I doubt the drive sits right underneath it (which is a good thing!!!)
-
It probably matters a lot how the phone hit the palmrest too...
I can see it denting if it hit exactly on a sharp point of the phone. -
I just tried dropping my 32" tv on M1530 well nothing happened.

Actually, my M1330 has developed some dents in the palmrest without dropping anything on it (and I use a lappymat too). They're more undulations than dents really - and can be seen when you look at the palmrest at an angle against the light. They were not there when I got it (for sure - because I checked!)
I checked out a friends M1530, and it definitely has a more solid palmrest than the 1330. I think it has more to do with what support the palmrest has underneath rather than it's thickness. With my 1330, if I lightly press on the area to the right of the touchpad, I can see it flexing. Not so with the 1530. -

If it really bugs you, I would call dell. First though, if you bought it with a credit card, you might see if your card includes accidental damage protection. I never buy Dell's two warranties (accidental and flaw damage) - AmEx has damage protection built-in up to $1,000 - a repair like that might cost you $200-350, but the cc might cover it.
XPS M1330 and 1530 owners beware!
