I'm having a problem with the battery indicator on my xps 630m. I formatted the laptop and installed a fresh copy of xp pro. As many of you know, when you hover over the battery icon on windows xp, it is supposed to show the battery life in both percentages and hours left.

My problem is it displays the percentage left correctly, but the hours left is wrong. I also do understand that its supposed to be an approximation, but thats not the issue. For example, when the battery life drops to 90%, it would display 1:30 hours, then at 50% it would display 1:45. The hours left fluctuates up and down at different percentage points. My friend also seems to have the same problem. Any solutions?

lt changes depending on usage. lf the laptop is being fully used when you checked at 90% then 1:30 may be right. But again at 50% the laptop could be idling and not really being used which is why it would display 1:45.

If you notice when you boot up, its pretty low. Check it next time you boot up, and then every 10 seconds, check it - it will rise, and rise.

Not sure if this is the issue....maybe a faulty battery?

Well that depends, If you had full brightness, wifi on, bluetooth on, speakers volume maxed out at the time you got 90% remaining, and if at the second time you had some of these options disabled then it is completely normal. It would adjust to the resources you are using.
