    Hi All,

I have an XPS M1530 which developed an odd problem yesterday. In addition to the OEM adapter, I have 2 universal adapters, a Kensington 120W, and a no-name, 90W.

Since yesterday, only the OEM one works as normal, and I get the message "plugged in, not charging" when I try either universal. Both of the universals will run the notebook with the battery out, and the battery doesn't discharge, but it doesn't charge either.

    Any clues???

    Thanks,
    Tony

I wouldn't trust my $2k machine to a universal adapter to begin with.

I just picked up two 90W Dell adapters for $30 a piece so it's not like they're super expensive and you NEED to buy a universal (potentially warranty voiding) adapter to save money.

I've noticed mine not charging when using the Dell adapter once. But restarting the notebook started it charging before.

Universal adapters are meant for universal computers. Buy Dell adapter if you want to use with you Dell computer!

True, but the universal adapters can be used in the car and on planes with the 12V input, and can charge your cell, PDA, GPS, etc. It's much more convenient to only have to carry 1 adapter when travelling. (Well, it would be if it worked!).

I'll keep my Dell adapter and then use my 12V inverter (which is the size of a small paperback book). Maybe not quite as convenient, but definitely reliable! :)
