18:53:01 Dervis K Hi just would like to know if the XPS M1710 will be phased out with a new revision of the notebook
as i do not want to buy it and then find out a month later that a santa rosa dx10 version of the m1710 has been released
18:53:02 XPS_Rep_Ioan An M1720 is coming out but it has an AMD processor instead of an Intel processor
18:53:17 XPS_Rep_Ioan but personally I think Intel chips are a lot better for performance
18:53:58 Dervis K yeah definetely - i cant believe they are just doing amd! also is there a time scale when this will be happening
    18:54:22 XPS_Rep_Ioan within the next 2-3 weeks
18:54:40 Dervis K o wow that is great and is that world wide?
    18:57:38 XPS_Rep_Ioan yes
18:57:51 XPS_Rep_Ioan once an upgrade takes place it is across the board
18:58:01 Dervis K great thanks for your massive help :)
18:58:13 System The session has ended!

WOW cant wait, lets just hope its good! But only having an AMD processor is not!! Apart from the AMD bit, he did not give me any specs :(

AMD? AMD? Are you kidding me? Santa Rosa rules, I hope Dell is not making a big mistake here.

Edited out the reps name and email address there.

I don't think this guy finished his product training, it seems to me the 1720 will be Intel based and 1721 AMD based. No way Dell would dump Intel on their 17" model.

I don't think Dell will come out with a Santa Rosa refresh of the M1710 until NVIDIA releases its 8800M GPU at the end of summer. It will probably be around end of August--beginning of September before we see a new high-end XPS notebook. By then, Intel will have also released their Santa Rosa Extreme CPU's with much higher clock rates (which would complement the new 8800M GPU nicely ;) )

I wonder if Dell is going with an AMD refresh in order to include the HD 2600 XT graphics card. That card sounds like the best mobile DX10 offering right now, but it sill doesn't beat out the good old Geforce Go 7950 GTX.

Anyone know if they will still be offering the M1710 as it is now after the refresh?

Maybe the sales rep is just messing with you. I know Dell has made a movement recently to include an option for AMD processors, but I doubt that they'd offer anything exclusively AMD, especially their top-of-the-line pull-out-all-the-stops notebook (I got the impression that the move to AMD was a cost-cutting one). Maybe that guy was mixing up his rumors--maybe he's thinking of Vostro or a new AMD-based Inspiron? (At least, so I hope.....)

I've seen posts around the net where people have supposedly gotten word from sales reps that "July will be a good month for everyone," so to hear that Dell wouldn't release a new 17" XPS until September makes me take everything with a grain of salt.
