I have an XPS M1210, Basically maxed out and was considering upgrading to a MacBook Pro (their hardware is awesome) but I am not sure I can do without the ATT 3G built into the M1210 so I may just keep this for a while.

    Any here is my question:

I am going to upgrade my RAM from 2GB to 4GB - I know Vista will only recognize 3 GB so I am better just installing a 1GB and 2GB stick or am I better to go with 4GB.

    Also ordered a 200GB 16MB Cache 7200RPM hard drive - currently had a 100GB hard Drive.

Any help with the RAM question would be appreciated. Also what type of performance gains can I expect?

It is hard for me to resist the MacBook.....

RAM will increase overall performance with vista drastically.

What are you planning on doing on this machine? I don't know how much of a difference you'd notice upgrading from 2GB. It's quite a lot of RAM already.

Why would you want to upgrade from 2GB ? What kind of applications do you use on your notebook? For now 2GB is enough.

I'd think not. There will probably be a bottleneck somewhere else. RAM should be fine.

any thoughts on what is better - ie 3 GB of RAM as that is all that is noticed (do I lose dual channel functionality) or 4GB?

Reason I ask is that I want best performance and I could upgrade another laptop to 3GB as well?

So what will work better - 3GB (1GB stick and 2GB stick) or 2 2GB sticks? Thanks!

2GB is more than enough for music and videos. As far as gaming goes, 7400 is too weak to run any game that can exhaust 2GB of RAM. Unless you are planning to do some serious video editing / image processing or run some sort of a server that requires lot of RAM like a database server, I’d say save your money and stick with 2GB.

Thanks PhoenixFx - but still have the question - what is better 3GB or 4GB?

4GB will definitely be better since you'll keep it running in dual mode or whatever-it-is. Also by having 4Gb you can pretty much turn off Windows virtual memory and forget about its swapping to the hard drive.
