I am interested in purchasing the 1330 with Ubuntu Linux pre-loaded. From what I hear that will not be available in the states for a few more weeks. Currently on the dell site I can get $800 off of the 1330. It says that that deal is ending jan 31st. I am thinking I should order it now and simply install Ubuntu myself to catch that deal. My question is, does Dell usually renew deals like that after they expire, or is this sale something that I could catch while it lasts?

If you wait, the Penryn will be in and the deals will be over I will bet.

There will always be some % off but from what I have seen ( I have been eyeing the m1330 since it first came out), Great Deals are not that frequent...I would jump on it and install it yourself .

When I've configured laptops it's usually cheaper to get the Windows pre-installed version. Then you can always install Ubuntu yourself later. It's free after all. You just have to make sure you configure it with compatible parts, i.e. Intel graphics & wireless.

This way when (if) you want to sell the laptop it has a valid Windows license attached.

agreed. they won't raise the price, but the deals will be over and it will be automatically more expensive with the penryn cpus. get that laptop now, it's a great bargain. the penryn isn't really worth to wait for, there's not much performance leap.

Is this current deal one of the better ones you have seen for this particular laptop?

Yes ! And they don't have as many Sale on the m1330 vs Inspiron...this matches the best sale I have seen which was when it first came out.

but the 1330 only comes with 8400 gs, not the 1520s (or 1530s) 8600 gt.

It's not 'the performance' I'm waiting for. It's the lesser power consumption, and hopefully, whine-freeness...ness, that I'm hoping for with Penryn. :)

    Go for it now!

I'm not sure if they're gonna make u have penrynn in february, If they do you can always ring dell up and say you have a cpu whine and then with luck they'l tell you that your get a free upgrade to penrynn because they don't sell the Santa Rosa ones anymore.

I don't believe that will work because they have stock available for system warranty purposes and it is a CPU, not a DVD or simple hard drive.

EDIT: If you don't know about the whine, don't ask...it will haunt you unnecessarily.

How many times do I have to say this on the forum. The cpu does not cause the whine. Its comes from power componets around the cpu socket. Also Because the the 1330 can already take the new 45nm Dell will not redesign the motherboard. To the OP Buy now. 45nm offers about a 5% boost. With the epp and current deal you will get a better config for less money. Buy now if want the 1330.

I bought one, got it last week.

I think current deal is great, there's been a lot of post about how performance / power consuption benefit of newer chip is marginable, it's really matter of your personal preference, and budget.

I jumped on it when they had 10% off on top of EPP. Got the 3 year accidental damage too, no more worrying about it at the security check point at airport. :)

employee purchase program. If you are in college, you can use the EPP. Or if you job might be on Dells epp list.

Yep.. agree on that... Probably as easy to install Ubuntu... Only reason to wait would be penryn.
