Which would be more appropriate for a little photo editing (mostly color adjustments, brightness +/- ) and some video editing from my HD camcorder?

    XPS or Latitude?

    Thanks! :)

Well the E supports up to 8 GB of memory, which should help with your HD editing

hmm, i think that 8gb of ram would be overkill even for HD video. besides u need a powerful processor more than ram for that sort of stuff. i would go with the latitude E because the new xps aren't coming till november and the current ones aren't that powerful anymore. if u had the dough for it, i would go for the macbook pro. even better fill out the FAQ.

I'm willing to spend up to $1600.

I'm trying to stay away from Macs - I dont know how to use them. :D

Really, I think this one comes down to personal preference. You can pretty much spec out an XPS 1330 or 1530 such that it will have the same multimedia editing performance as a Latitude E5x00 or E6x00. The higher-end processors for the Montevina platform won't really show too much of an advantage unless you're doing a lot of the said tasks.

XPS 1330 and 1530 are a pretty good deal right now; Latitude E5x00 and E6x00 not so much.

And yes, you probably won't be using 8GB of memory within the lifetime of the machine; most people don't even use 4GB yet.

The Latitude screens are matte-only for most models, while the XPS I think is glossy-only. So that would probably be the biggest difference. Also, XPS offers LED-backlit screens... not sure which Latitude models have this, if any.

The XPS m1330 should support 8gb as well. Its based on the same chipset as the Latitude d630/d830 (Santa Rosa).

But the E-Series Latitude has better build quality, the backlit keyboard, has the newer chipset, Gigabit Ethernet (why the h*ll does the m1330 only have 100mbit??), eSATA, docking stations, etc...

Worth the extra money though? You'll have to decide. I think an E6500 with the WUXGA screen would be extremely attractive for HD video work. But you're probably looking at over $2k for such a configuration right now.

Funny thing though, most people use the wireless and not the ethernet ;)
