Mine was fine...what are you specifically asking about?

To some extent LCDs are luck of the draw.

Have a brand new XPS , the answer to your question is complicated:

What brand did Dell put in your XPS? Samsung or LG Philips
Most prefer LG Philips for brightness and color reproduction.
I really don't like my Samsung WUXGA 17" because it simply is not bright enough and have been fighting with Dell all the way to the top, Mr. Michael Dell's office, to get what I want and originally asked for specifically, the LG Philips WUXGA 17"!

Don't know about M1710, but there are pretty awful screens fitted to some XPS M1210s. They are made by Toshiba (Hardware ID: LCD58E).
One such screen : Dell 1210 screen problem.

    more info at notebookforums

So you cant say ALL XPS screens are good.

My screen is great. Nice viewing angles and very bright. The brightness can also go really low by using fn+down.

Only thing is that it doesn't look very good if NVIDIA powermizer is on. So I basically keep powermizer off all the time (unless I really need battery life like when I am on a plane).

How can u get on Michael's office.. that's some serious customer who's very picky there.

Overall I got 3 replacements with 3different screen. LG is the best... sometimes there's little horizontal lines that decrease the detail of the pixels on screen.. especially on the left side. When i visit Dell store yesterday, I don't see them... and the screen looks perfect and bright on their newly vista preinstalled Inspiron E1705.

Why don't Dell just order LG screens to put in their LCDS ? than put a crappy Sharp LCD in their laptops.

Received mine 2/9/07, Samsung screen w/ AV (from another forum I guess that's weird, they seemed to think if you get AV you get AUO) and I'm very happy with it. No light leakage, very bright and clear, still in honeymoon phase :)
