After reading different articles, people usually say an XPS will outperform the inspiron/vostro with the same specs. Why is this? Also why is the XPS 1710 so much more expensive than the inpsiron when you have them configured almost the same way (except for the 8600M GT v 7900GS)?

i guess they think that because people think that since xps is a name that is meant for power, perfomance, and versatility(xps stands for extreme performance system), that it is really good.that isnt true because a computers a computer anyway.its the quality that changes it.

THE difference is the 7900/7950. XPS customers also recieve premium tech support (i.e. not waiting on chat/or the phone for 2 hours, etc).

The only other real difference is the T7600G processor, which allows for overclocking, but the M1710 will soon be phased out for the M1730 (which will have the X7800 – 2.60 GHz proc and SLi graphics -- which will def not be available on the vostro/inspiron line, of course)...

And they also comes with colorful fancy display lights, an attractive gamers design and some even say better build quality.

what I want to know is if all us 1720 owners will be able to drop in a more powerful gpu once they hit with the xps line. Kind of like how many of us upgraded from 7900gs's to 7950gtx in our 1705's. *prays*

It's because the XPS has the notebook equivalent of "go faster stripes". :D

But yeah, this is like saying an Inspiron 1520 will outperform a Vostro 1500 with the same stats... which is pretty much hogwash. Chances are the XPS with the same stats as the latter two machines will perform the same, specially since a lot of hardware is shared across Dell notebooks.

    I chose XPS because:

    1. Apparently quicker delivery (I would have spent more on a vostro/inspiron so it wasn't like they were pushing the generally more expensive XPS)
    2. There's plenty of reviews on its good performance and excellent build quality.
    3. I wanted to play current games at optimum settings which would be helped by the 512mb 7950GTX card.

I prefer the look of the 1720 and the mo-spec-fo-less-money angle that I could get with them over the XPS. Same with the 1700.

If I had the option of quicker delivery, I would have chosen the 1700/1720.
If I had the option to wait a month or two, I would have gotten the 1730.
