is it apples to apples if I configure a 9300 to match an XPS Gen 2?

no the 6800 ultra in the XPS2 will be about 30%-40% faster GPU.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Now I need to decide if the price difference is equal to the GPU increase.

The 9300 isn't really that big for 8.2lbs. If it is going to be a notebook that is going to be carried around, you should go for the 6000, but the 9300 is wonderful. It depends on you, and what you want to do with the machine. Even though I bought the 9300 than the XPS Gen 2, I still get 75fps avg at 1920x1200 in Unreal Tournament 2004, and Half Life 2 runs perfectly. So, it's up to you.

    Dell Inspiron 9300
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    1.86 ghz Intel Pentium M
    1 GB ram
    80 GB 5400 rpm
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 256 MB video card
    17'' WideScreen UXGA with TrueLife

isn't the XPS laptop an inch or so bigger than the 9300?
If they are the same size, go for the XPS, but if you DO get the xps, at least get a new design shell for it.

I think the XPS in huge letters looks ridiculous and will annoy people in the library or wherever you are doing work.

However, as ugly as the XPS is, it is FAST! So if that is more important, or the deciding factor, go for it by all means.

Sorry to input my opinion on the matter and not fact [8D]

Lol I thought the xps2 looks ugly too -- the Neon lights are mesmorizing for all of 15 seconds -- then you wish that Dell would just give you back the money instead of designing some worthless trinket into an otherwise outstanding laptop. I guess some ppl like it, I wish for once Dell would choose a PLAIN black slab or silver slab design...

that being said, the xps2 is WAY fast in terms of graphics. Price/Performance never scales in a linear fashion. If you want the absolute fastest the xps2 is it right now -- at a price premium.

    cheers,

    yass

I've had both the 9300 and XPS. I made a mistake having the LCD replaced 3 times. I originally had an LG, then 3 Samsungs. In hindsight, I love the LG compared to the Samsung. I really needed Gigabit. The XPS has it, the 9300 doesn't. So I ordered an XPS. I don't like the way the XPS looks but it does what I need and it has a beautiful LG! I'm happy! This is a keeper!

If the 9300 only had Gigbit and Firewire 800 that's what I'd have. But life is all about compromise, so I'll carry this gaudy, childish looking XPS cause it's the closest I can get to my ideal notebook now.

Thank you all for your input! It looks like the $750 off Coupon does not pertain to the XPS.

Does Dell ever have coupons for the XPS other that the specials they have listed on their web site?

    TIA

I doubt they will have any good coupons for the xps for quite a while.

if your not in a hurry wait they will have a coupon that will more than likely work for the XPS2.

btw, the XPS has much louder audio than the 9300, it seems to weigh a lot more (9300 actually seems light compared to its size) and it runs hotter than the 9300 - cause of the GPU - therefore lower battery times.
