I am looking into getting a new laptop for college next fall. I currently own a Dell Inspiron 2650, which was purchased about 4 years ago, and is now seriously outdated.

My current debate is between the XPS M1210 and the Inspiron 1405. Basically it will be a difference of around $500 after I customize them. I am wondering why the XPS is more expensive, and whether it is worth the extra money. I definetly would prefer its smaller size, and I like the built in webcam and the look of the XPS, but $500 is alot of money!

Thanks for any info! Also, I am not technology savy, so please try and keep things simple for me! Thank you!

You're paying for a premium, i. e. better customer support, warranty, etc.

I went through a similar debate myself. Personally, I would pay the extra money and go with the xps M1210. The smaller size/light weight design is perfect for college. The built in camera is excellent for say recording lectures, and speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that the XPS tech support is amazingly good. The battery life is supposed to very good as well; that's another huge plus. Go for the M1210.

As zicky stated, with the XPS you are getting a more durable/better built system. You also get a special number to call tech support (i believe) that is better than the support that you would get with the Inspiron series.

Personally, I would also go with the 1210 if i liked smaller screens.

The case on the 1210 is also a little special. They advertise it being a magnisum alloy, so its super tough. Im sure that makes a bit of a difference in price. Also smaller in lots of cases means more expensive. The 1210 isnt only a performance model, but its a tiny performance model, that means extra $$$. But I think its worth it, ill be ordering mine this week.

I m in similar situation too. Except that I m in India n be buying it when I come to states for few weeks. So customer support doesnt matter to me. I m fine with 15.4 inch n would prefer 17 inch. So screen size not an issue. So what do ye all suggest for me??
