Long time lurker, first time poster :)

I ordered my XPS1330 through EPP, but the lowest option available for the memory was 2 gb. Of course Dell is charging their exuberant price to get it, so I was wondering if anyone attempted to call in and downgrade their memory to 1 GB (is this even allowed?). I'm planning on downgrading my memory so I have the money to upgrade my hard drive to 7200 RPM, because I'm assuming the hard drive would be harder to upgrade yourself than the memory.

Also in terms of the video card, I currently left it at the default Intel Media Accelerator card, and I was wondering if I should change it to the Nvidia option (I'm considering getting Starcraft 2 in the future), so would it make that big of a difference to justify the extra $100 (I'd have to somehow muster it up since I would be over the budget that my parents are allowing)? I'm assuming it would also drain the battery faster and run a little hotter?

    Thanks!

You really want 2GB for windows Vista anyway and I don't think they will.

They'll tell you that you cant modify your order while some people have had success modifying their current order. They'll also say your only option is to cancel and reorder.

If the current epp pricing you used is still available then it shouldnt be an issue but if its no longer around then your going have to jump through some hoops to make this happen.

I wanted to downgrade my warranty to pay for an additional 9 cell and after talking to at least 6 different reps and with just about 2 hours of my life wasted i gave up.

He probably wants 1gb because to get 2gb from dell they charge you $150 for the second 1gb stick. So its much cheaper to buy the ram yourself.

If you call to change anything they will cancel your current order and replace the order with a new one. So you will lose your current est ship date.

Starcraft 2 looks like it is going to be pretty a pretty demanding game. But RTS games in the past have been good at allowing you to turn down the graphics and detail to allow you to play on lower end systems. That being said though I really do not feel that the X3100 is going to be good enough to play that game to its potential.

If I were you I would upgrade the graphics if you really plan to play games in the future, and want them to look good. Yes it will produce more heat, and drain more power, but if you want to play games you will have to live with that. ;)

Memory and Hard drives are both fairly easy to upgrade yourself. The hard drive is only 2 screws then you just have to get your OS and data back on it. Memory (as you know) is even easier.

Video and processor are hard to upgrade. So I would say get the processor and video you can afford now, and upgrade the memory later. See if you really need more hard drive space later too.

OMG I'm such an idiot, the only reason it started at 2 GB was because I chose the "Better" option instead of the "Good" option (you can start at good, better, or best), and good is the one with the 1 gb option.

I'll just cancel and reconfigure. I just ordered yesterday anyways, so changing it now won't have any effects. I'll also upgrade the memory at a later point in time since its considerably cheaper.

And thanks for all the very quick replies!

If I had thought about it more, I would have ordered 1GB too. Because I have soo long to wait now I have plenty of time to order all the extra parts I need, have them shipped ground from Australia, take them on my cruise around the world, and still have them all ready to install when my laptop gets here.

I really don't understand why the different alternatives are not fully configurable. e.g. in China choosing the best option allows 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 GHz processors. Choosing cheap allows 1.5 GHz processor. Why not just allow full flexibility for each option? They can still have different "recommended" or defaults.

Well people would choose the "good" performance system, then lower the cpu lower the ram, remove the video. Then call up Dell later and say "I bought the Good Config and it does not play the games I want to play, you suck!"
