Hi, I have a XPS1530 T9300, 3GB, 7200RPM 200g, 8600m GT, XK309 screen(replaced :) ). my problem is that any window with a grid in it is incredibly slow to display. ie SQL Server2005 table with only 5\6 columns and 1\2 doz rows. Have also noted that if I have 1 window maximised(exporer for example) and have a smaller window on top (notepad), if i drag the window around it leaves a trail all over the screen. I have tried numerous nVidia drivers and same effect remains. Did a 3DMark06 score of 3990 today. By the way have installed XP as well. Has anyone else ever had these symptoms, cure??

I dont know about SQL, but I have a very similar 1530, and have loads of Excel spreadsheets, with LOTS grids, graphs, data, formulas, etc. and they all load at the speed of light here. Dragging the Excel window around leaves no trails per say, other than the usual "LCD blurring". Sorry I can't give you a cure, but I thought I'd share my experience.

You might have a heat problem.

The issues you quoted definitely sound driver related, not sure where Forte gets the heat idea, he doesn't even own a 1530 - and rest assured the cooling solution in the laptop is excellent. No users have had a legitimate heat related performance issue on this laptop to my knowledge, some people just look for trouble where it doesn't exist?

What driver version are you running on XP? My guess is that you may not have uninstalled the previous drivers correctly before trying new ones. You have to remove everything from add-remove programs, and then roll back or uninstall the video driver in device manager, and do whatever else you have to do so that windows lists your video driver as "standard VGA display adaptorr" or whatever they call it.

If you have gone that far, forgive me. But just in case you haven't - do it, and install 174.31 which seems like the best choice. Given your specs you should be getting far higher than 3900 in 3Dmark06 - I'd say at least 4300-4400, but I've seen scores of 4640-4740 given your specs (stock clocks).

Download here in case you don't have it:

Make sure you replace the stock INF with the modded INF before install. I'd also use the have-disk method to install, rather than using the EXE. After install, check in display properties to make sure the right driver is being used.

Apart from that though, make sure windows isn't running a power saving profile when you have these issues, maybe grab rivatuner and make sure your video card is sitting at the correct stock clocks (not below) etc. But yeah try the driver first.

Have tried your suggestion following your directions stricktly. Improved 3DMark score to 4357, unfortunately no improvement in grid display either in SQLServer or my own app.Almost wish I'd tried this out before I upgraded from Vista to XP Pro SP2. If you have any other suggestions or hear of anyone else with this problem I'll continue to check back on this thread to see. Don't know if it's at all relevant but my resolution is 1680\1050. I have tried changing the resolution in steps right down to 1024\768, made a very small improvement but still totally unacceptable. My desktop machine has very similar specs to this laptop and use 22" monitor at 1680\1050 no problems at all.

I have to agree with Udi on the driver issue. You have something conflicting somewhere, you might want to try removing the drivers completely and re-installing.

I have the same resolution and SQL Server and Excel will display rows without any problem. Then again I'm using Vista on mine.

As for Forte, seems it's more about quantity than quality...

Thanks Rhodan, I did completely remove drivers but this did not work unfortunatley. I think it must be something to do with WinXP as my specs are fine. Guess I'll just have to put up with it. :(
