The "new" XPS M170 is just the old Gen2 with a few more options, thats all. There isnt any detailed info on Dell's website as to how it is an improvement over the gen2!!!

Hey guys I wanted to ask you for some advice. I just ordered the xps gen 2 last week, it was shipped the day before the M170 was released; therefore, I can not change my oder anymore.
Is there a major difference bewteen these two? I read a lot of complains about problems with the LCD of the xps gen 2 (sparkle effect and light leakage), was this fixed in the m170? Now, I do not know if I should refuse the order of the xps gen 2. I got a 35% discount, and I am afraid I wont get a coupon like that for the M170 for a while.

the m170 has only been avalible online for a day, so i dont think any body knows yet...i think they are using the same exact parts as the xps2. all we know for sure is it has a new optional video card.

LCD details according to Dell are identical. The only apparent difference is option of the 7800 GTX gpu as well as the 6800 Ultra, for extra US$349.

I was trying to get more info from DELL about the xps gen 2 vs. the Xps M170. They told me the difference was the upgrade on the Video card to the NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7800 GTX, the BIOS, and the hinge cover, which is attached to the LCD. Then, I asked about the problem that some LCD's of the XPS2 have: "light leakage and sparkle effect". He said that they fixed the problem and that is why the xps was re-engineered and named XPSM170.....but I don't know if that was just crap he was making up......or what. Another representative told me they are the same thing just different name....and yet another one ...."do not compare oranges to apples"....what a jerk. So I do not know what a hell is going on....could you guys please educate me a little bit?

And if you're lucky enough to be in the UK, you don't even have the option of a 7800 yet. WTH? The sales people I've spoken to don't even know about it, even though it's listed on the product details page as an option, but not on the purchase page. Stupid, really.

I just checked the UK site, and both gpu options, the 6800 Ultra and the 7800, are available, with a differential of £82.25.

im assuming you got them from aafes...

i think this is one of the reasons dell bumped up the price for aafes because people were buying a bunch of them to sell on ebay...and now for the time being nobody can get low prices on the xps m170.

...luckily i ordered one before they stopped. ;)

win xp media center, pentium m 760, geforce go 7800 gtx, 1gb ddr2, 80gb hdd at 5400 rpm, dvd burner, pro wireless 2200ab, 1 year warrenty. all for a grand total $1871, expected delivery oct 14. :p as of today for the specs i ordered the price is $2946.

    good bye 9300 :(

Yeah, gotta love aafes!! But I watch them all the time, the prices change almost everyday. One day they will be really expensive, the next they will be an amazing price. they'll go down again ;)

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) mission is to provide quality merchandise and services of necessity and convenience to authorized customers at uniformly low prices; and generate reasonable earnings to supplement appropriated funds for the support of US Army and US Air Force Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Programs. These contributions to the Soldier and Airman and their families make AAFES a major non-pay benefit to customers.

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum. Probably be spending a bit time here now I've order my XPS M170 with Pentium M 770, 2g of RAM, G7 7800 GTX plus the DVD burner. Couldn't justify the M 780. Great posts from people and I will be recommending this site to my friends.

I know the XPS is an expensive machine but you only live once! I was considering the Eversham Quest Roma ML-37 but went the XPS instead.

Was quite lucky because I ordered it while dell were offering 2G of memory instead of 1G. A heathy saving of £705!

I've been tracking the prices this week. The 7800 GTX started as £58 for the upgrade. It's now £118. Must be the supply and demand of this card.

Should be a trusty allie playing Battlefield 2 from my Hotel room, encoding DVD's for my PDA and pugging into my Audi! I saved playing Doom 3 until I had a decent PC. I can't wait!

No its not possible, unless you want to pay for another laptop in a way. If you havent had your gen 2 for 21 days, you still can return it and get the XPS M170.

It is possible to upgrade the Gen 2's video card to a 7800. I have a friend that did it. I will ask him if there was anything special involved, other than simply swapping cards. Have to wait until Tuesday though.

It's very possible to do, but it will cost you $500. It will definitely cost more than the already high $350 upgrade if you configured a brand new notebook.

Hmm 500 dollars. Well considering the fact that i might be able to get a discount coupon and buy the card seperately. The thing is that i ordered it from USA and right now am in the UK for atleast an year. Ill get be getting it on monday hopefully if it clears customs without any problems. So all I have to do is to go to dells site and order a 7800 gxt and ill replace it myself and sell of the old one that is if i can manage to sell it and how about that led light blinking software.
