After a few weeks of waiting, my Dell Inspiron 1420 is here in my office, quietly heating up a spot on my desk! I took all of these pictures with my beloved Sanyo M1.

When our receptionist messaged me to let me know my package arrived, this is what greeted me.

I was astonished at the small size of this box, our Latitude notebooks come in boxes about 4 times the size of this one.

    The placemat that comes with.

3 software discs, 2 relatively thick manuals (will never get read), 90w power supply and detachable cord.

Notice my shoes in the background, also green...this is a very casual office!

OOooooh, the Spring Green finish looks even better in person!

    Your standard Inspiron all-silver interior.

It didn't come this way, I popped off the fascia because I thought I'd need to remove the keyboard (like in so many previous Dells) in order to add more memory...

...as it turns out, both memory slots are nestled underneath the "C/M" cover on the bottom. I am pleasantly surprised by this!

I popped in 4GB of ram ($89 shipped from Newegg), an upgrade from the 1GB that I ordered from Dell...No way am I going to spend $300 for Dell to upgrade it for me.

Scroll bar taking it's dear sweet time before it freaks out that I put in the extra memory.

    Intel Pentium Core2Duo T7500

The Inspiron recognized my aftermarket 4GB of ram with aplomb.

    nVidia Geforce 8400, Intel Wifi-N, WXGA+ LCD.

No idea why virtualization was turned off, so I turned it back on.

Upon rebooting, Dell MediaDirect started loading. I did not get the usual "Dell EULA/Service Tag" screens that I see when powering up new Dells.

So far, I'm quite happy with my new (two hour old) Dell. I've avoided Inspirons in the past because they came with too much bloatware, but when I loaded up this one, the only "unwanted" program that was installed Google Desktop/Toolbar, which really is a trivial uninstall.

Also, having used the Latitudes (namely the D6x0 series), the extended battery in the back really threw me for a loop, since the battery is on the FRONT with the Latitudes, I kept trying to open the Inspiron from the back.

And while the Inspiron may not fit in a manila envelope like your Macbook Air...

Thats awesome that both the memory slots are in the same spot on the bottom. Dell finally realized that people don't want to perform too much surgery on the friggin thing :D. Btw did you get vista ultimate 64 bit to run that 4 gigs of ram? lol

Most Dells I've worked on have both memory slots on the bottom, with the one exception being the XPS M121O.

    Congrats on the new laptop!

My Inspiron is nearly 2 years old and it's still kickin' strong!

They'll hang in there through some rough stuff.

I'm *green* with envy! My similar build with the midnight blue finish is on a truck somewhere... soon to be on my doorstep! Let us know how it goes during the next couple of days.

There isn't much light leakage, it's only really noticeable in dark scenes, and since I don't play Doom3, it doesn't really affect me

    Thanks everyone!

You don't need ultimate. Just the X64 version. Home Basic x64 is 8GB, Prenium is 16GB and business + ultimate are 128GB
