So I got my Vostro 1500, WXGA+ glossy today, and whoop de doo, the screen is grainy :(

That's not the worst part though, I could live with the graininess, but the viewing angles are really horrid on this screen. When looking straight at it, the light really fades away on the right side and bottom, so I have to move my head to view the whole screen lit up.

Called Dell today, and the sales rep said there was no way he could set up another Vostro with a SEC or LG screen specifically, and if they were to replace the LCD, I would just get it replaced by the same brand.

So I have to call them back tomorrow, but not sure what to say. I saw a post on theese forums about Vostros shipping with more and more AUO screens, so getting a replacement 1500 would be risky.

I could go for a 1500 with WSXGA+ instead, but I'm worried the resolution might be a little over the top. 1440x900 seems perfect to me.

Third option is of course to send it back and by another brand laptop, but I really do like my Vostro, except for the screen.

So what do you guys think? Any feedback on the WSXGA+ res would be great, and how would games look like in 1280x800 on it?

    Thanks

This might sound stupid, but what exactly does "Grainy screen" mean?

The screen looks dirty or greasy, most noticable on whites.

If you choose to return a dell laptop due to an issue like this for a refund (not a replacement), are you charged the 15% restocking fee???

I like my WSXGA+ screen on my Inspiron. It is the SEC/Samsung.

The thing that struck me the most was that changing the resolution down to 1440x900 or 1280x800 did not seem to impact the crispness at all, even with fine text. In fact, I have my desktop set to 1440x900 most of the time, and just bump it up to 1680x1050 when I am needing the extra room - and It is beautiful at all three resoltions.

Ive played several games on it (Oblivion, Tomb Raider Legend, Dungeon Seige II, Nexus) and they all look great at whatever resolution I put it at.

A key with LCD screens is that the higher the resolution the screen, the -less- noticeable any artifacts are when you switch to lower resolutions. And with the 1680x1050 screen, frankly, I dont see -any- blurring or diminished appearance at lesser resolutions.

The one thing that -does- bother me is that Vista keeps saying "Your screen can look better if you go back to native resolution, click this bubble to fix", lol.

Is your screen an AUO2077? (Mine is)

    See: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=151032

I don't really mind the "graininess" (don't notice it too much, and text and images do seem very sharp), however the "light fading issue" is what concerns me a bit - is this normal though for 15.4" WXGA+ (1440 x 900) screens? One thing I notice is that the screen contents (both text and images) are viewable from a very wide angle - vertically and especially horizontally, which is good. It's just the lighting that annoys me a bit.

Other than this, like you I find the 1440 x 900 resolution just perfect for the 15.4" screen - and am very happy (so far) with all other aspects of my Vostro 1500.

I *may* call Dell about the screen - but I wouldn't want my screen to be replaced if I'm going to get exactly the same or a worse one. I can't quite decide if I'm happy with my current screen or not - but I certainly don't find it terrible.

Yup, it's an AUO2077. I'm thinking the same, I'm getting used to the grain, but the light is the issue.. Trying hard to like it, but I know this is gonna bug me if I don't replace it.

That sounds good, might go for a WSXGA+ replacement then. Then again, I kind of regret not getting the Vostro 1700 :p

One more question, did any of you who got replacements have to send your laptop back first? Not too keen on going without a lappie for another two weeks..

No.. they generally just ship out the replacement and it will have a way bill for you to return the original system. Also, on my original SEC 1420 system, the viewing angles were horrible. But I still liked it. The AUO actually had better viewing angles but the horrible grain problems. Since you are looking at a 15.4 inch display the SEC may have better viewing angles. But if its anything like the 14", you are not going to like the SEC either if viewing angle is important to you. The 14" had a very small sweet spot (but when sitting in front, with adjustment, the SEC was amazing). If you like good viewing angles the WUXGA on the 17 are reported to be very good.

The more I read and participate in these grainy threads the more convinced I am the best road is to either drop down the resolution to wxga or move up to wuxga. If I were to start over today, I would have purchased a wxga TL 1420 and would probably have been a happy camper. That was what people were recommending to do when these new dells shipped out 1.5 months back.. I should have listened.

I am still on the fence on this whole graininess/viewing angle problem. I was actually fine with it at first because i was playing a game and it doesn't bother me on that. It's just that when i am not in a game, and just doing the normal computing it bothers me. The light fading on the right (only on the right) bothers me too. I tried to convince myself its not a problem because I have already gotten a lot back from dell, i feel i would be over stepping some sort of boundries. I have called and have recieved a 75 credit for a delay, 100 credit for not accpeting vista eula, a media center remote, a ir express card remote, and next day shipping on everything, for free. I am really torn on this issue..............

I must admit that someone at my work today got their new 1520 Inspiron. And I finally see what they mean by grainy. The screen looks very greasy, and the light coverage is not even at all. I hope no issues like this will be on my M1330

    Probably got a wxga + 1440X900 Correct?
Its a known issue that display manufacturers have trouble making non grainy wxga + panels. But if these threads are any indication.. the problem seems to be getting worse with some reports that the SEC ones being grainy too. Solution: Drop the res to wxga or up it to wuxga. I know the wxga + is a sweet spot for a 15 inch panel but until the display manufacturers figure out how to make them correctly, I'd stay away. There really is not much Dell can do to fix this.

As for the m1330, that has a regular 1280X800 resolution I believe. I don't think you will have any issues with graininess. Dell puts allot more care in their XPS systems and I doubt they would use displays that have grainy issues.. The M1330 uses new LED technology and with the regular native resolution yours should look fine.
