I just got off the phone with a Dell Rep in the returns department and was able to get $50 back for Windows Vista Home Basic (which is great since I have my own copy of Ultimate as it is from the Beta testing)
Had a Inspirion 1520, T7300 etc for $1300 after tax, now 1250 after tax.
Not bad!
It CAN be done

why would this occur? I really don't know
-
because requirements from Microsoft says they have to give it back to you i read it somewhere
-
umm, could someone explain this better? what are the conditions?
-
do they need "proof"?
-
Sweet, I'm gonna do the same. I have my own copy of Vista Business and planned on taking Vista Home off the second I got it.
Could you please outline the steps taken to get $50 back for Home Basic? -
here it is for windows xp but i know it works with vista becuase i have seen it done not by me but by someone else

Hey 50 dollars for a free phone call and some of your time is more than worth it. Hell, thats the kind of mentality that most companies think we all have that's why they make billions in profit so easily.
You show em. -
Dell will give you $50 for calling them up and telling them you have a runny nose. Are they having you peel of the CoA tag and mail all media back to them?
-
i will try this awesome!!!!
-
Great deal !!!! Thanks for the info
-
Conversely, is the Windows Vista that comes with the Inspiron 1520 or Vostro 1500 a "real" copy, such that you get an actual DVD of Vista, or is it just some lame recovery disk?
-
Getting a Windows refund only works if your computer is new. If you've booted into Windows once and hit the Accept button at the end of the Microsoft EULA, you're disqualified.
i wonder how many people didn't notice this and call dell for a refund... -
Not mailing anything back either. I'll see if I can find the rep ID -
my order has just been shipped and its in transit. can i still call and ask for a refund? is it "easier" to get the refund when your order is still in production?
-
-
And, more importantly, declined!

-
You know if this would work with other companies ?

Well last time i asked to have the XP home replaced with XP Pro they didn't ask me to send back the old one, and i got a new label (she actually told me to put it over the old one)
P.S i was not asked to pay extra. That was sweet.

"Hi! I don't need my OS, per the EULA I would like to return it for a refund." /complaining
as proven by the thread starter it isn't a big deal. If you enjoy paying extra for stuff you don't need or won't use, by all means continue to bend over and enjoy a reaming. -

Regardless of what the original poster got, the "right" is only claimable if you receive the software, read the Eula, and decline it, and send back the proper documentation.
So just saying "it doesnt matter!" could cause some people to call in, and demand their refund, and be told "No, sorry", and get mad -thinking- that it was their -right-, because they were misled by comments like yours.
Thats what the other posters are trying to clear up. People that dont follow directions and miss out will surely "give a crap" -
mtylerjr understands this situation. Since rejecting the EULA for a refund is primarily a legal issue, the specifics behind how caveman got $50 is are very important. I can tell you right now if Dell starts taking back Vista licenses (CoA tags in this case) for money back as a policy, the flood gates are going to open over there.

Just got an email from Dell that they processed a $50 credit back to my amex.
All it took was one call, got a American rep. They knew what I wanted and didn't make a big deal about it. -
they would not budge when i asked.. they said no way i spoke with 3 different american reps about it also.. id love another 50$ off lol i have my own vista disc ill be using anyway
-
anyone have luck with this over the chat feature?? and did the reps know exactly what you were asking when you called about this?? i really dont need this vista copy and def want to 50$ instead...
-
zfactor you probably hit the concession limit for your system. dell gives out $50 like candy on halloween. this is how my call went when i called about my battery...
me "ok so what i want to do is exchange my 9 cell battery for a 6 cell battery and not pay shipping"
rep "well if you return the 9 cell you will only get $23 credit and you can buy the 6 cell"
me "how much is the 6 cell"
rep "$53"
me "ok well since the 9 cell is normally an upgrade item, if there is any price difference, it should be in my favor. what you just offered would cost me $30 to downgrade so that is not really what i was looking to do"
rep "please hold"
...
rep "i can send you a coupon for $50, or you can buy the 6 cell for $3"
me "$3???"
rep "$3 + taxes after i apply the $50 coupon"
me "ok"
after tax the battery cost me $6 and the rep covered the shipping -
did you have to send back the 9-cell for that though?
-
no i have both batteries
-
nice!, lol a $3 item have $3 tax, wow thats $100!!!
-
-
The rep I got from an email conversation basically told me that he can refund me for Vista... if I send the whole system back for a full refund because some "license with microsoft doesn't allow us to give refunds or concessions".

After 36 long minutes i was told i would receive credit too. I am not sure if they want me to mail in the coa or anything like that, but i will receive this credit AND the $75 compensation from the delay (they made me drive halfway across country to pick up my laptop from my college).
-
...they didn't make you drive halfway across the country to pick up your laptop from your college, you did that on your own
You CAN get money back for Vista!
