I'm just about to press the trigger on this one. I decided not to go with the largest resolution because it rid me of $150 and since I can always plug it in to a screen at home. Any thing anyone wants to say this machine, from experience?

Spend the extra 150. It's a great great screen. Great machine too

    Core 2 Duo T7200
    2GB RAM 667
    100GB HD 7200
    nVidia 7900GS 256MB
    Vista Ultimate

Good to hear that about the build quality, everyone's has been saying it's good, but a whole bunch of people say it's bad. I think they just don't like its plain design.
Is it really that great? I'm thinking that if I have it functioning on battery power, my primary concern isn't going to be to make sure that everything is pwetty. :)

Definitely spend the extra on the screen. I originally ordered mine with the basic screen, but turned around and sent it back. It was dim, blotchy and had a ton of light leakage. The WUXGA screen I got in exchange is is awesome. The difference is amazing.

Awesome specs on that laptop. That should be a very good machine.
    Dell's build quality is average.

It should be a very good and powerful machine. Enjoy!

If you can spend money to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB AND the Vista Ultimate, $150 is not a problem for a great screen!

It really is that great. I've never seen a better screen in my life. And it can do 1080p for when you but a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player for the dvd drive :D

Hmm. I have a new question:

since I've heard so many good things about the screen, I am interested in getting it. However, those $150 are a problem (seems like a small problem because I'm already decking out enough, but limits are limits...). So, I was thinking, if I get the screen and reduce it to the 1.73 ghz core 2 duo, would gaming and such be noticeably very different? And would it be about as future-proof (like such a thing exists lol) as the T7200?

I think that processor has more than enough oomph to play games.

Hmm, I was going to go for a $1915 config. with both the UXGA screen and the 2.0 processor, but lo and behold, Gateway is offering almost the identical system in the NX860XL, for $1824. I was aware of this Gateway model previously, but it seems to have gotten cheaper.

So, anything I should know about the Gateway? Why it's cheaper? Is it better or worse than the Dell? Wrong forum as this is Dell, but just wondering.

I'm about to buy exactly the same machine as you (hopefuly in a couple of weeks time).
I think you'll be making a mistake going for anything less than a T7200 on a system like that. If you want to reduce price, I'd take a smaller/slower HD, less RAM (1 gig), since these are very easy to upgrade later on (namely the RAM), cpu is anywhere from very hard to impossible to upgrade, so I guess you should stick to the T7200.

Back when I worked at Best Buy, we sold Gateway computers...

    ...I will never own one...lol....

They were easily the WORST computer I have ever seen. Incredibly packed with bloatware, poorly built, pig machines. We had one demo model that broke 3 times in a month until we gave up on replacing the demo. Total pieces of crap.

Ya my computer friend says the same thing. He was working with them while he was at the White House and he said they sucked.

He said if you get anything get a sony but we all know how pricy those things are.

if you can find a dell coupon you could prob get your setup for less than that gateway.

i got a 9400 (setup below) and the thing gets the jobs done. its Great for gaming and gets the job done when it comes to photo editing, mulltitasking, etc.

i decided for power or visual specs in my price and just went with the wxga but i got my setup for less than $1600 (with tax)

however alot of ppl have said good things about the wuxga screens so i might want to switch to that.
