What is your experience with phone buying? Do you get any further discounts that are not listed on the websites?

I tried calling this morning, and asked to see if I can get anymore further discounts on the m1210 other than the free 2GB listed on Dell Canada. The person said they never do anymore personal private discounts to anybody, but I've read in many places online where people got these discounts just from talking - such as $75 off, free hardware upgrade parts, and overnight shipping free. Speaking of overnight shipping, Dell Canada said they have no such thing at all. Are they just trying to hide discounts for me or is this true - What I see on the website is the best deal I am going to get, and I can't argue for more?

In addition, I am wondering if the 3 year CompleteCare warranty is worth $319 for my M1210 which I'm going to buy soon... What is your viewpoint on warranties and do you think they are worth it? Honestly, throughout all my products used, I've never used a single extended warranty. Maybe I'm just the lucky guy, I don't know... *Hope the M1210 is lucky too :p*

I just want to hear your phone buying experience and whether the Dell representative that I talked to this morning was true about the fact that Dell "Canada" do not offer any further private discounts through the phone and whatever is on promotion this week on the website is the best they can provide.

Thank you for your attention! I need to hear this soon as I am buying within tonight and tomorrow...

most of the discounts you hear about are from people who have a "reason" to call back and complain; maybe it's taking longer to get their notebook than they like or something got messed up on their order. usually, the discounts are not from someone just calling up and requesting something.

if you are just calling out of the blue and asking for $ off, you have no leverage; i'm not saying it's impossible, i'm just saying don't get the wrong idea from the stuff you've been hearing/reading.

i personally never get extended warranties, but i'm computer savvy and am not afraid to take my notebook apart to fix things if need be. i also take care of my machine; i.e., clean out the dust regularly, monitor temps, keep the system running cool, etc.

however, you should get the warranty you are comfortable with; i just happen to be comfortable with the shortest/cheapest one.

    good luck.

FYI I bought my M1710 by phone.

ACCORDING TO THE SALESMAN ... they claim to have "phone-only" unadvertised specials.

But the reason why I bought my M1710 via phone --

I told him that I have a friend with a website which is a Dell affiliate (IOW they make a commission off each sale from their site). I asked him "Why should I buy from you instead of my friend's site?".

As a result, he knocked off $120 from the price ... remember, Dell doesn't offer coupons for the XPS.

My advice: call and ask. If they don't give you a good deal, you can always buy off the web later.

So HAPPY! I called Dell tonight to try again and this Indian guy was way nicer than that Canadian fag I got this morning. He offered me a $69 CAD total off discount. I know it's not a lot but hey... it's better than nothing!

So now my M1210 with Core 2 Duo is coming soon... September 18th or earlier (hopefully) :)

the gentleman i spoke to this afternoon upgraded my warranty to the EPP SILVER (3-Year At-Home w/ 2-Yr Anti-Virus plus more) from the EPP 3-Yr Basic for free. This gave me a $100 off Dell gift card for my next purchase. He also upgraded the shipping to next day while knocking $50 instantly for DFS financing.

BTW, I plan on paying off the notebook in full the first month...i know all about DFS

Final Price: $2100.41 (don't forget the $100 off later) AFTER TAX & SHIPPING...see my sig for the specs
