I have a Latitude D 520 (Core Duo 1.6 GH;integrated Intel Video GM 945).I bought it with one slot 512 DDR2 533 MHZ module). The other slot will remain emty-it doesn't work properly for some reason. The only choice I have to upgrade to 1 GB is to teplace the 512 MB 533 MHZ memory module I have with a 1 GB one.
Now I want to replece it with 1 GB 677 MHZ.Will my chipset let the memory work on 677 MHZ or will it clock it down to 533 MHZ? The other slot will remain emty-it doesn't work.
    any suggestion?

Doing a check on Dell's site, it looks like they are selling PC2-5300 / 667 MHz SODIMMs as RAM specifically targeted for the D520, so it looks like your chipset should be fine running the memory at 677 MHz.

thank you guys!! I hope that the chipset will syncrinise the memory speed with the processor bus speed( which is 667) and the systesm will run a bit faster..

Actually you cant achieve 1:1 FSB : DRAM with that config because the processor's actual FSB will be 167 Mhz (Quad pumped leads to 667 Mhz) and the DRAM frequency will be 333 Mhz (DDR doubles up to actual 667 Mhz) and you will be running at a 1:2 FSB : DRAM ratio only.....

But for all the Core 2 Duo Mobile processors you cant achieve 1:1 ratio for RAM modules above DDR2-400 without overclocking.... If you overclock the processor FSB alone you can effectively use the faster RAM modules....

Similar is the case with the Desktop Core 2 Duos as well but those have slighlty higher FSBs upto 333 Mhz (1333 Mhz Rated FSB) which is useless for anything higher than DDR2-667....

So DRAM frequency will hardly play much role in increasing your system performance as the processor FSB is the bottleneck here.... This is the case with all Intel processors.... For AMD (HyperTransport) it is a completely different picture as the have the Memory Controller on the processor itself.... ;)
