    tried this last week.
wanted to do a clean install, but also wanted to keep the factory hard disk condition just in case. so downloaded acronis true image 11 trial and tried to make a image of the whole hard disk for backup.
i tried to burn the image to DVD. it ended up with 3 DVD, totally ~9G (4 partitions total). After image was done (took hours), image check (took hours again) reported ok. I thought this image should be good to use.
then i tested to restore the whole disk from the image on DVD. restore was done without problem, and i could boot into vista. so C: partition is ok. then i tested d: recovery partition, trying to recover from d: partition::::
here came the problem: the recovery process went smooth, no problem. but after the recovery was done, i could never boot any more, the machine stopped after the dell logo and hard disk was working on something but never continued.

i dont know if this is caused by the errors from dvd burning or the fact that acronis true image can not handle big file (d: partition contains large image file, >3g?).

but now the d: partition is no longer good, it can not be used for recovery. so i just clean install vista with MD.

for those who wants to use acronis true image to make whole disk image for m1330 including recovery partition, be aware that it may cause problem in the recovery partition.
also if someone ever succeeds in this, please let me know, it means the dvd burning may give me this problem.

I have heard this problem else where some say to back it up to an external HDD or use version 10 which gives much better results.
The version you used was it v11.0 Build 8053?

yes, the version is the lastest one, v11-8053.
at the beginning i did not know that acronis true image actually would work with usb drive. later i tried to backup the whole hard disk to an usb external hdd, it was much faster and probably more reliable. but the d: partition is already not working now, i have no way to check.
