I ordered my 1737 with a 160gb main drive, knowing I could buy a larger one at a later date and install it as a second drive.

I understand in order to do this I'll need a special cradle and connector for the second drive bay.

Where can I get these in the UK? I've searched the Dell site and can't find anything even remotely like what I need!

    Thanks

It should already have the assembly inside, all you need to get is the HDD.

Yeah all you need to do is remove the bottom access panel and you should see two HDD enclosures inside, if so then all you need is the HDD.

You can find it either on eBay or call Dell and order it.

just an update on this - there is NO bracket and NO interposer in the 'HDD2' space, just an empty space and a sticker with 'HDD2' on it. Bit cheap of Dell not to include these on a £650 machine!

Thanks for the link jason1214, I'm in the UK so I'm not sure I can order through the US Dell site, but at least I can contact UK customer support with the part numbers :)

Thought it would be a change to normal Dell practice if the unused caddy and interposer was in the machine. They dont usually do that.

This forum will provide you with better support than Dell can. Especially if you get the outsourced techs.

bumping this back to the top for any more information, I just called Dell to try and order the parts (again) and got put on hold, transferred, transferred again, put on hold for ten minutes, transferred and finally hung up on!

all I want is the parts to install a second drive!!

This is what I bought directly from Dell.com.

Part number: (SKU) 341-7101 -- HDD DIY KIT (Excluding HDD)

It came with the bracket AND the interposer connector.

It was about $24.00 or so.

    Ok, a 'little' progress here.

You can not buy this part from the Dell UK site.
You can not, if you're in the UK, buy from the Dell USA site.
If you call Dell (UK) they have no idea what you're talking about and transfer you to someone else, who eventually... *breakthrough* ... transfers you to a partner company called 'Upgrade Options Ltd' who are based in the UK.

The guy I spoke to there said he can speak to his contact at Dell USA and try and get the part shipped over for me, although it'll be more than $10.99 + shipping. Hes supposed to be getting back to me with a quote.

It seems like an insane way to do business, why the hell can't I get this part in the UK direct from Dell??

The way I did it was to ring up tech support and play dumb a bit. "Thought I'd add another harddrive but, lo and behold, theres no caddy in the other bay. And I have the drive here now. I've found the part numbers and wonder if you could help me purchase it"

I had already had a screen swop so had a chance to build up a relationship with a member of tech support - sent him an email along the lines of the above and he sent them me for nothing. I have Small Business Warranty so they may be a little more likely to please but worth a shot. Certainly Customer Support are pretty useless when it comes to this. Speak to Tech Support and get them to put you through to CS and make sure they know what you want.
