I recently bot a refurbished Dell Inspiron. It's not the first one, but this is slightly larger than a net book, and I have not been able to hook up a full size monitor or keyboard to it.
It has 3 usb ports, and I purchased an adapter for a monitor (15pin/usb), but no luck

Your laptop should have either a VGA/DVI or an S-Video out connector on the back of the laptop. There's no need to buy additional accessories. Once you connect your monitor press Fn + F8 (that toggles the LCD to Monitor). ;)
