I am about to order a Latitude D810. I want the quietest HD possible. Offered are a 4200rpm 30G HD ( but a bit small), a 5400rpm @ 40G, 60G and 80G (the last 2 the most likely choices), and a 4200rpm 100G. I am not considering the 7200rpm 60G. Dell does not seem to indicate the make of each HD. Maybe they vary? Perhaps the model can be requested? But which one is the quietest? I imagine that would mean "native" noise level (interior noise of operation) and also "foreign" noise level, due to less heat being created (the 4200rpm HD and those with fewer platters? ie the smaller HD"s?). Experience from recent Inspiron 6000 and 9300 users would also be welcome! I would imagine the HD's would be pretty similar there.

    I have 2 D810s, one with 80GB 5400 and the other with 60GB 7200.

The HD noise level seems to be about the same.

Thanks, miker, 1) do you find a big difference in performance between the two drives? from there, do you recommend the 7200rpm HD or the 5400rpm 80G? 2) which manufacturer made the 80G, and does it have a 8m or 16m cache? I assume the 7200rpm 60G is a Hitachi?

The computer with the 7200 rpm drive also has a 2.0 ghz processor, vs. 1.86. It is faster, probably due to both the drive speed and the better processor.
