The original system with the grainy AUO screen and headphone jack noise is on its way back to Dell. The replacement is the third one... the second had a similar screen (though I didn't check the maker) and was an WSXGA rather than the WXGA+ I had ordered (made things too tiny for me).
This replacement is so far quite fine (and a relief after what I had to do to get it... there was a long delay between #2 and #3 in which a screen replacement was cancelled because my order mysteriously lost all warranty information... and no one bothered to contact me.) Maybe that was a blessing very well disguised because that extra four weeks was enough to produce this:
    Midnight Blue Inspiron 1520 - T7300
    256MB Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT
160G 5400RPM SATA HD (swapped with the original due to loud random clicking. Now we just have a pleasant low coffee percolator sound)
    WXGA+ 1440x900 - (LPLDF00) - Beautiful!
    Headphone jack - NO noise!

Thanks to everyone here who helped make me a more informed consumer!

Hey congrats. Sometimes you just gotta nudge Dell repeatedly in the right direction before they finally get it right.

Sounds like a nice system. Have fun. :D

I think dell is having problems metting the demand of the new notebooks. That is what happens in all industrys when they make more faster they end up below par. I guess they just have started to slow down production. Good buy, and have fun with it!
