this is good. we will see lower prices soon.

amd is not that good in compared to intel for mobile processors anymore. With the core 2 duo coming out amd is inferior to that of intel. but that is my own opinion

HP has had both Intel and AMD equivalents of its notebooks for quite some time. It's about time Dell joined the party. I'm hoping the AMD CPUs won't be placed into a low-end notebook like the B-series Inspiron. A Turion X2 E1505 would be nice.

great news -
It's nice news, but seems a bit "too little, too late" to me. On the one hand, it'll be great in that Dell can offer them as an alternative and, if they're sensible, at a lower price point than the Intel systems. Because, frankly, they've waited now for Intel to have a huge advantage in both desktop and laptop performance to start offering AMD solutions. Especially considering deltafx1942's review on Friday of the Acer Aspire 5102WLMi. That SuperPi score was pretty sad at 2m 22s, aside from the assessment that 1.6ghz Turion 64 X2 "is nowhere as fast as an Intel Core Duo T2300, or even the stripped Intel T2050". Sure, your mileage may vary from system to system with different components, but a cpu's generally going to behave the same way in every notebook it's in as seen by numerous comparison tests. And if it's having this hard a time comparing to a Yonah, I'm sure it's not gonna look great next to a Merom. The one thing that will really be the factor for pushing the AMD Dells will have to be the price. The good news for AMD in that respect is that, with Dell beginning to drastically change their pricing and coupon policy (as seen by the lack of great coupons even this week and Inspiron price hikes someone reported), people may just buy them because a Merom will be easily more expensive without coupons to help out. Sure, none of this is written in stone and we don't know what exactly Dell's pricing and coupon status will settle into for certain, but I see that as a strong likelihood.

I do agree though that the AMD-based Dell notebooks will probably be budget systems. We can all hope they will make their way into higher-end systems, but it doesn't look that way, at least to start. -
You're right, Chaz. So long as it's nothing as bad as "Buy a Merom laptop, get a second Sempron system for $20 more!"

Intel crushes AMD in the mobile market (and I run all my machines with AMD Athlon chips)
And given the release of Core 2 Duo for desktops, AMD gets crushed in that segment as well.
The turion X2 is underpowered compared to a comprable Core Duo CPU -
Not to mention that AMDs are not known for their good battery life. I think it's kinda funny that Dell is doing this now. They know that Intel is pwning AMD on pretty much all fronts. It's kinda like they're trying to please everyone. Please AMD, please those hardcore AMD fans out there, but still please themselves because they know that Intel chips are better and are going to probably severly outsell the AMD options. Kinda funny.

Yeah Intel ownes AMD now, and they will in the immedate future, hopefully for a good long time. But this is a good thing for both sides, Intel and AMD supporters. Competition is the best possible thing for consumers, because Dell offering AMD along with Intel will drop prices across the board. This is a good thing for us and Intel, but bad for AMD.
