are you saying only that the battery won't charge but it works on a/c?

i wouldn't be surprised if a 3 year old battery is totally dead.

mm... this is like asking "my car doesn't start! anybody have any ideas?"

It can be many things. For example, the power supply, the motherboard, the battery or battery/power supply connectors etc.

Have you tried to take the battery out, plug the power supply into the laptop and see if it starts? If that doesn't work then your problem is not the battery.
You can check the voltage coming from the power supply using a multimeter. If it is close to the rated voltage (written on the power supply). I also had problems where a faulty ram stick didn't allow the laptop to turn on..

Anyhow, lots and lots of things can be wrong.
