So after some more time of ownership on my new laptop, I've noticed some areas with a little amount of play and I wanted to know if people were "suffering" from the same thing.
1. on top of the monitor. The top boarder about 3.5 inches from the right. if i squeeze that spot with my thumb and index finger, i notice that it's not connected fully. I can also see a seperation between the grey boarder and the black lcd cover.
2. right side boarder on the right of the enter, page up, page down buttons. If you press slightly there is a bit of play.
3. How many of you have play between the battery and the housing for the battery?
I know people are going to think I'm being nitpicking and finding faults with a perfectly fine laptop (which it is) but I'm just curious to see if anyone else have these problems.
and if you don't have these problems, can you list any other physical problems you guys have.
Thanks

Its normal for the chasis to have a little flex, you would be hard pressed to find any laptop that didnt. I dont have any that's really noticeable, since I havent noticed it, and I carry my laptop around on a daily basis. The M1210 is a lot sturdier than the e1505, as the latter is all plastic.
-
oh yeah, wouldn't argue with you there. I have both and the M1210 makes my E1505 feel like a fisher price toy for toddlers.
another problem that I have is my mousepad. I can't use the scroll bars on the windows to scroll because once I pause and retouch the surface of the touchpad, the pointer jumps to a way different location of the screen. Anyone know what could cause this problem? I disabled scrolling, edgemotion, and gestures and I still can't get this problem fixed. -
The play on that part of the keyboard is fairly well-documented. I haven't noticed any flex around the screen--honestly because of the slightly larger-than-average casing, the screen seems very secure to me. I have the 9 cell battery, and I can't even get it to wiggle. Haven't noticed the issue with the scroll bar.
There are really only two things that bother me design-wise--one being the fingerprint magnet that is the cover, and the other being the light leakage (and dust-attraction) around the strip that has the Num/Caps Lock, Wi-Fi, etc. lights (if we're being REALLY picky).
-
i'm suprised you guys have such sturdy batteries. Mine wiggles and it's a tad bit annoying.
and that darn scrolling problem... i don't know how to fix it and it's really bothering me. I'm debating to call dell on site for this. -

I dont have a problem with the scrolling at all, do you use the left touchpad button?, or the double tap feature? I think you mentiond this before actually, if the pointer is on a scroll bar,a left click or a double tap will move the bar all thwe ay up or down depending on which half of the bar the pinter is at, that happens to me on my desktops and laptops, just slide the pointer slightly off the bar when you pause.
-
i click the scroll bar on the windows using the left click, then i'll move the pointer and it'll just transport way across the the screen. It does this if my pointer is on the scroll bar or next to it. It doesn't matter where. It will just always do it. I'm thinking it's a defect in the touchpad. what do you think?
-
while we're at it, why does my screen flicker black some times randomly. and some times it'll do it in series of two flicks. What gives? thanks guys. Hopefully these questions help someone else out as well.
-
My screen flickers once when coming back on after hibernation, but never at any other time.
-
mine does it frequently and for no particular reason. Some times it does it when I'm installing programs and some times it'll just do it for no reason at all. I'm using Vista by the way.
-
Ahhhh I'm still on XP--that could *potentially* be the source of your problems. Have you tried looking for updated drivers?
-
i have not.
a weird thing is that some times the scrolling actually works fine. As in right now for example.
On the first page of this thread, I left clicked the scroll bar and was holding the left click and moving my fingers up and down the touchpad and it's not jumping at all. I'm even taking my fingers off the touchpad and placing it on another part of the touchpad and the pointer isn't going crazy.
this is weird. maybe i should contact on site.
thanks iceman and stella. -
Have you tried just using the integrated scroll bars instead of taking the time to left-click?
-
I honestly prefer the left click scrolling style because it's much smoother to me. Maybe I'll have to resort to that or reinstall my driver by going to dell. I'll give that a shot. I guess it has nothing to do with my settings on the Synaptics Pointing Device since it's not consistent in it's behavior.

Where is your notebook made? China?? When I called DELL to ask about my order, they said it will take about a week or week & half since they had to get it made and shipped from China. Just curious.. No offence to anyone, but personally I'm not so enthusiastic about Chinese made electronics

They are made in Malaysia.

Vista is still buggy, that could be the cause of your problems, XP is the way to go right now for anything other than a "play" machine.
With your touch pad, it sounds to me like your double tap sensitivity might be too high, do you even use the feature? If you use strictly use the touchpad buttons you should try disabling it and see if the problem goes away, I'm think it will, personally I cant live without the double tap, I hardly ever use the touchpad buttons. -
Bottom right corner of the keyboard has some flex.
My battery is snug and doesn't wiggle at all.
The screen flickers once for me when coming out of hibernation. -
sorry for the off topic posts..
-
No, it's assembled in Malaysia. Maybe the guy knew it was from asia but called malaysia, china, just because he was ignorant? Take what Dell Customer Representatives say with a grain of salt. That's what I've learned from them.

iceman, stella, and whoever else may be interested -
i just noticed that not only does it do it while scrolling, but while I move icons (drag and drop) and try to highlight things as well.
this is really frustrating. I think my only option may be to contact dell onsite. -
Well, the rep was a Chinese girl, I don't think she would get her own country confused with Malaysia
. Maybe she doesn't know where they are made. Since most of the Inspirons are shipped from China she must have assumed XPSs are too.
In any case I don't have any control over the matter. I only hope what I get is built to the same standards as what is sold in US. -
Like Iceman said, possibly settings for double-click turned up too high (personally I'm just the opposite of him--I can't tolerate having it turned on at all). Try turning it off and see if that fixes it. Are you sure you aren't maybe tapping the touchpad in another place with a different finger? I get similar behavior to what you're describing if I let my left hand relax too much and the side of my thumb ends up on the touchpad.
I would try contacting Dell if it is affecting your use of the laptop. It is of course possible that you got a faulty touchpad.
any area with play on your xps M1210?
