the d420? it's a matte screen, no camera, integrated gpu, integrated ram with a max of 1.5gb, no styling, ULV core duo (xps m1210 is c2d up to 2.33 now)... not even in the same league!

Perhaps check out a Sony Vaio, but besides for that, Dell's XPS line is kickin' some serious butt.

yea, but the M1210 is at least 2x the weight, maybe 3x. It's not a true ultraportable.

No its not at "true" ultra portable, but if 5 pounds is too much for you to carry how do you have the strength to breath? I mean seriously, yeah its a dense, and heavy notebook for its size, but thats because its loaded.

Now to answer the question, no I dont believe there are any other 12" notebooks on the market that even come close to the hardware capabilities of the M1210. And as far as the processor goes, arnt they now offering Core 2 on it?

M1210 is almost in a league of its own. While the D420 looks better, the power is nowhere near the same thing. The M1210 has some features that the E1505 can't touch. Very nice laptop.

exactly. Spec for spec no 12" compares to the m1210. Cant haul that extra 1 pound? take the tupperware of hummus and pita outa your bag. Seriously, 1 pound does not make a difference, as going from 4 pounds to 7 or 8 does.

it boils down to your needs, if you dont need the video power, camera and whatnot, then you would be better served with the 420, save a few bucks, and get more battery life, sometimes you dont need or want the fully loaded model

I don't think so - there is the Sony SZ series and at least one 12" Asus that has dedicated graphics.

Nope the SZ is 13.3in. Asus 12in is the W5 and that doesnt have a dedicated graphics card. The chassis is the size of a 13.3in laptop (same size as the w7).

However, the SZ being a 13.3in, its actually 0.2lbs lighter than the m1210. Just that SZ might run you a couple of hundred dollars more for the same specs as the m1210.

This is true, its if you need it or not. For me, im in college, so I need something protable. But I also love to play games, and the 7400 can top out HL2 and BF2 so its all good. As for the web cam, It was only $100 so I got it because I just thought it would be cool to have. But Ive actually used it alot, and I really love having it.

and on the battery...I am still in shock with the amount of time I can get off of the 9 cell. I've gotten a FULL 6:30 with the brightness set 4 "clicks" from the top setting with wifi, web browser, Word and trillian running.

And it comes in very handy when you have to be on campus for an afternoon. I feel bad for those ppl who have to sit next to an outlet just to use their lapper in class.

Maybe it is just because the battery is still relatively new, but  its great!

Yes, that too, the 1210 with teh 9-Cell has outstanding battery life, even with the graphics card. Processor dosent really matter since they all clock down to save power any way, mine can just reach a higher level...and a hotter one too.

The Asus W7J is a very nice laptop, same GeForce Go 7400 GPU as in the M1210. Larger screen (13.3"), AND weighs less! Cost is very comparable to the M1210. So what you may ask is the downside? Well the battery life is less. From reviews I've seen, perhaps 1.5 hrs less run time vs. a 9 cell M1210. Secondly I've seen reports that IF you want to use dual channel system memory, the W7J memory subsystem is designed for a maximum of 1GB DRAM. Something to the effect that the first 512 MB is hard wired/soldered into the system in a non-DIMM slot. Thus another 512 MB module can be paried with it. I think there are two open DIMM slots on this laptop, but adding a second 512 MB module would cause you to lose your dual channel operational efficiency.

So if you want longer battery life or use memory hogging apps, then the M1210 is the way to go. Since both of those considerations apply to me, I ordered the Core 2 Duo M1210...

i dunno where you're getting that from but the current max ram is 1.5gb for the w7j..it can get almost 6hrs battery life from what users have reported..you just have to make sure that the web cam is off..either way if you want the dell you better get it before all the deals are phased out entirely

Do you know why the 1210 is heavier then the w7j? Because its case is solid metal, which makes it very very tough. I would glady loose 1" of monitor size, and gain hald a pound for a metal notebook instead of a plastic one.

Plus that thing has a very strange RAM setup. 1.5GB is the max? The 1210's is 4GB, yeah it costs $3000 extra to get that much, but still. I need 2GB in this thing.

After being very happy with my old reliable D800 for over three years, it was time for a new laptop. It came down between a Samsung X11 and an XPS 1210. I picked the 1210 and I have to say that I'm very happy. The size and weight is just fine, heck anything compared to a D800 feels like I'm carrying a bag of feathers. I'm not much of a gamer, but I'm a heavy Photoshop/CAD user and it works just fine -- though I think I need to boost my RAM from 1GB to 2GB. It may not be an 'ultraportable' in the classic sense of weight and thickness, but consider it an ultraportable on steroids :)

jterp7, I checked the asus spec sheet and there's only one open DIMM for the w7j. You can drop in a 512MB module and pair it for dual channel operation with the 512MB soldered into the laptop. Or you can add a 1GB module and lose the dual channel functionality.

P.S. the review I read on the w7j got just shy of 3hrs on the battery with brightness at less than 20% and the nvidia powermizer applet set to max battery life. he didn't indicate whether the camera was turned off.

is the m1210 really that durable or even made of solid metal?? either way if you're going for durability at the very least go for the lenovo's instead like the x60s which is 3lbs...or the toughbooks

Phone service technician was by earlier. Had a 'ToughBook'. Droped it on the floor and everything. One tough cookie.

The M1210 is made of metal? Likely really hard plastic and magnesium alloy for the lid.

^^ I second that....I opened up the M1210 to apply AS5 on the heatsink...
The casing is all metal, and feels very sturdy and impressive from the inside where there no black paint as on the outside

the smaller form factor and the (seemingly) much better build made me chhose it over the SZ though I was getting both (equally specces) for approx the same price
