I'm about to place an order for an e1405 and cant make up my mind on the screen. I'm worried about all the bad I heard with the Ultrasharp, and I already returend the e1705 and it was not easy dealing with Dell on this return.

They want to troubleshoot everything like you are dumb.. I cant go though that crap again....

I called dell and they said the addresed the issue.. Total BS.

Mine isn't bothering me. In fact, if I hadn't read about the problem on these forums, I doubt I would notice it at all.

Unless it finds a way to get worse, I'll be keeping it.

Are you on the ultrasharp screen? Is the resolution ok.. such as surfing the web and icons not too small?

    Thanks nick

I just got my E1405 today and I have to say the screen is absolutely bugging the crap out of me. I'm still going to try to get used to it just to save the hassel of returning it. Otherwise I like the machine. Summary o' screen gripes...

Fuzzy-ish at 1440x900 (similar to the effect of a CRT w/ a low refresh rate)

    Colors washed out

Backlighting completely uneven, definite leakage at bottom

More or less what you have read here is true. I thought I would roll the dice anyway and if I had it to do all over again I would have gone for another model/brand but since it's already here, on my desk, it's another story.

It probably doesn't help that the laptop is sitting right next to my 2005FPW monitor, which looks aboslutely great. It pales in comparison to my four year old Gateway 450SX which I was replacing.

But maybe I can get used to it... :/

If not, hello Sony SZ series.

I got my E1405 yesterday. To be honest with you, it has more light leakage than I would have prefered. I could have dealt with a little with no problem at all, but on a black screen it is visible 1/3 way up the screen. I have the truelife screen, and besides the light problem, the computer has been great otherwise.

It seems this is just another example of the manufacturer cutting corners on the notebook's most expensive component - , the LCD, just to save money.

it's the same LCDs that many other companies use. the problem is in the installation.

It(the leakage) is definately there, but not a problem. In all honesty it isn't that bad, it is only noticeable on the bottom strip of the screen where the taskbar is and by adjusting the viewing angle the leakage becomes even less noticeable.

I returned mine due to the glare of the truelife screen. To me it's unusable outdoors or in a room with any amount of light. I ordered the same machine with the matte screen - should have it tomorrow. Other than the glare, it was an awesome screen. Resolution was nice... somewhat on the small side, but very sharp. My screen was perfect. No light leakage at all. It was an AUO(?)

I just got mine. I think its getting less noticeable then before hand. It does not really bug me. The screen is "ok", but not brilliant. But its not exactly a $5,000 laptop either.

swordfish01 - got my laptop, using it right now. I definitely like this matte screen better. I used both of them side by side for a while to see which one I was going to keep. The ONLY thing I preferred about the truelife screen was the higher resolution. 1280x800 on the matte is probably better for long term use etc though. I am sending the truelife back first thing in the morning. The matte screen is much better in my opinion. Its all I have ever used, and is what I have on my Desktop flat panel.... hope that helps.

The Truelife high gloss. It's not too bad, I suppose I'll get used to it!

Matte doesn't stand for anything. it is the one with the non-gloss finish.

I think they are talking about the one with rough finish and the one with the smooth finish

Haha, I just got my m1405, and backing up the whole disk with True Image at the moment.

I can now sees why the screen can be annoying to some, it doesn't look like light leakage, it looks like there is an uneven area over the screen.
But its not a problem at all, unless you look at completely black screen all the time.
The screen is great, sharp contrast, comfortable to look at, I love this gloosy screen!!

I have to agree. Although I wouldn't say that I LOVE it, I'll be able to live with it. I don't use black screens all day, but when I'm watching a widescreen DVD, the leakage on the bottom IS somewhat of a problem.
