I have it set up with Ntune, but I haven't actually cranked it up yet. I'm kind of waiting to see what numbers others can get that are stable first.

the 8600M GT uses the same core as the desktop 8600 GT, so there should be no problem getting 600 on the core.

Someone said you needed to download drivers from something like laptopvideo2go.com - that the supplied drivers resist overclocking.

I recently got a stable overclock of 550/500 on my 1520, I might be able to take it higher but I havent tried yet.

I don't get how people aren't overclocking the card when it's completely safe and worth doing. You aren't going to blow up the card or computer if you get an unstable overclock so why not overclock it?

Because you don't need to overclock creating more heat and less battery life when it runs games fine to begin with. I can see in another year when it doesn't play games as well and you need that little performance boost. Right now the only reason is to get higher benches.

There has been a wide range of people commenting on the GPU's ability to play today's best games, some of them being very positive while others are nearly disappointed. Games such as Quake Wars and Call of Juarez could use all of the power from the GPU that they can get and would benefit greatly from an overclocking of the graphics card.

It works the same as any other graphics card overclock. First you have to download a GPU software program such as Rivatuner to do the actual overclocking. After this, you theoretically increase the clocks by 10-15 mhz, reboot, and test for stability. You continue this until instability occurs, at which point you back off the overclock by 10-15 mhz. You can test for instability by running 3dmark back to back, playing games and being on the lookout for artifacts (obvious flaws in the game's appearance), or using some other type of artifact detecting software. ATI tool offers an artifact detecting tool, but i'm not sure how the program runs in Vista or if it's any good. The general concensus is that if you are not retarded about overclocking the gpu you won't cause any damage to your computer.

The problem is that I can't get the overclock to stick. I have tried using Ntune, and it immediately resets when I hit apply. In Rivatuner it will let me hit apply but if I hit ok, it resets the clocks. This is driving me nuts!

Luckily none of my games (except cnc3) need OCing to run at max smoothly.

there's a real need for a basic guide to this. I think what version of the drivers makes a difference, and what progran you use to overclock too.

I remember the good old days when you just used coolbits, but those days seem to be over, alas.

I'd really like to see what this card is capable of, i'm thinking it can do more than it's being allowed to.

*EDIT* 3dMark06 was running like crap so I reset and all overclocking went away. Working on this. *EDIT*

I'm overclocked right now at 600MHz core and 513MHz memory. I haven't run 36Mark06 on it yet, but I had been scoring around 3088. I did however last night score a 3264 (no overclocking, I don't know why it jumped up). I had a Windows Performance rating of 4.6 for "Desktop Performance for Windows Aero" which is now a 5.5, and I had a 5.2 for "3d business and gaming graphics performance which is now a 5.4. I'll post my 3dmark06 score in a sec. Here's the steps I took. My GPU was running at ~56 degrees Celsius before the overclocking. The highest I've seen it get now is 61 degrees.

    1. Go to NVidia's website and download the NTune utility. Install.
    2. Open and run NTune. Click on the Performance tab.
    3. Accept the license agreement saying you may void warranty, etc.
    4. Go to "Adjust GPU Settings" under Performance.
    5. Adjust the core and memory sliders as desired (again I'm at 600/515).
    6. Click above "Adjust GPU Settings" on "Change display configuration"
    7. You should get a message telling you changes were made that need to be saved. Save the changes.
    8. After doing this, my settings remain the same. This is where I've been going and running the Windows Performance Assesment (I get here from Games in the start menu).

I'll run 3dMark06 again and post my score.

    Awesome

I downloaded Ntune, and conservatively bumped up by numbers to 550Mhz CoreBus - 496Mhz Memory Bus and this raised my 3dMark06 score from 2900 to 3435 - over 500 pts.

(The little slider wouldnt let me choose 500Mhz even for Memory Bus - it goes right from 496 to 503, lol)

This is with Vista, WSXGA+, and the default drivers shipped by dell (I havent updated any)

Ive set it now at 596Mhz Core Bus, 496Mhz Memory Bus, and I'm rerunning 3DMark06.

After changing my Core Bus to 596Mhz and my Memory Bus to 496Mhz and this raised my 3dMark06 score from 2900 to 3550 - a full 650 pts.

Alright, I used driver 111.28 (just let the driver update automatically). I can overclock, but my clock settings are reset to the factory ones upon a reset of the computer. My 3dMark06 score went from 3088 to a 3666 after clocking to 575/475. If anyone knows a way to get the settings to stay after a restart, please post.

mtylerjr, you can click on a slider and use left and right on the keyboard to bump one number at a time. Also, what drivers are you using, and what util? Have you tried restarting to see if the clock speeds remain where they were prior to the restart?

    Ntune says

    GeForce video 101.43 (7.15.11.0143)
    nForce GART 163.86 (6.0.6000.16386)

Im not sure if those give you the driver version.

I installed the 162.18 nvidia drivers and installed ntune. However, when I attempt to set the clock speeds higher, it immediately resets to factory settings when I hit "apply." Any ideas?

Using Ntune is the easiest, and it will do a stability test before leaving the new overclock settings.

1.) Download install Ntune from Nvidia website
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.47.00.html
    install application driver

2.) Right click desktop and choose "Nvidia Control Panel"
Click on performance and accept Agreement to Overclock

3.) Click the radio button for Custom clock frequencies

4.) Slide Core bus and Memory bus slider to new clocks

5.) Click apply in the lower right, it will run stability test before applying
*** if it does not, you are using a non overclocking driver version

6.) To save the overclock click on the top "Profile Save" give it a memorable name

7.) To save the profile to load on windows start, Click on the left Adjust Custom Rules

8.) Build a ruleset to load the profile on computer start
    - Click the box "Load this Profile"
    - In middle right box, click the blue word Profile, choose your OC profile
    - Next set the condition, click "The system first starts Windows" in the middle left box, then click the arrow pointing right to move into next box
    - Then click accept to setup the rule

*** It's been said the 16*.** drivers will not allow overclock. You'll need to find a good driver from laptopvideo2go.com under downloads. They have WHQL packages, they have non-WHQL packages and they have straight driver with modified INF files. If you don't know how to download just drivers using a modified INF file, I HIGHLY recommend you just select a full driver install package of a driver rev that will overclock.

hope that helps a few folks

REMEMBER overclocking can kill your video card, will generate MORE heat, and lower BATTERY life. In the very least I recommend you use the NVIDIA NTUNE application as it will stability test and is easier to configure than Rivatuner.

    Core x Memory = 3DMark06
    ====================
    500 x 400 = 3150
    555 x 455 = 3620
600 x 500 = 3920 (seemed to run hot, how are you guys checking temps?)

    2 questions,

does overclocking the card voids Dell warranty?
16*.** drivers will not allow to overclock, the question is: once the overclocking is done, can I upgrade to the latest driver release?

yes it does void your warranty. same with over clocking your processor. If your part fails from over clocking, it will be obvious when they open it up and look at the scorch marks on the unit.
