I am amshamed to ask this, ive only been on this forum for a little while, and just started learning about laptops. I just bought my first laptop today. The question is, what is overclocking? How would I do this on a 1720?

There's nothing to be ashamed of for not knowing an answer, and Google can answer pretty much any question you throw at it.

I wouldn't suggest overclocking a notebook...as they get hot very easily.

Overclocking means that you will run your machine @ faster speeds than the originals.

It voids your warranty, and can kill your computer / components.

And it cannot be done with most OEM system that are sold such as Dell, HP, Sony...

However, with the 1720, you will be able to overclock the Video card using programs like ATITOOL (for nvidia as well), and RivaTuner.

It's pretty easy, but understand that it can kill your VGA or your system all together!

Overclocking is trying to get more from your system for which you paid less and then paying more to replace the system you paid less. Remember on a clock after 12 it is back to 1.

Overclocking does not have that deadly of a result as people are making it out to be. Within consideration it shortens the life cycle by like...10% give or take... Hardly noticeable.

And as far as I know it doesn't void Dell's warranties - if it did why are CSR's recommending it to people that complain there systems are slow.

Overclocking is unnecessary honestly unless you really need that 'extra' 5 - 20 FPS in a video game... Fun to experiment with though and learn how to do.

And it doesn't max the temperatures out either.. I overclock mine just for the fun of it is only a max of 1 - 4 degrees hotter.. That's hardly nothing.
