I just got my Dell 6400 laptop three days ago, and it keeps freezing up and then giving my a blue screen stating some sorta error with ati2dvag.dll, something about an infinite loop. I reformatted, reinstalled windows, and tried Omega drivers, same thing. Any idea what's wrong with my laptop?

Yep, I contacted Dell and am waiting for a response.

    Duo Core 1.8 ghz
    1024mb RAM
    100gb 7700 harddrive
    ATI x1400

Yea, I've searched around and tried everything. The one from sightsea didn't work, and plus supposedly it slows down the whole system.

Wait, hope this one thread didn't dissuade you from getting your laptop. I've read that this problem has happened with other 6400s, but most of them seem fine. My friend just got one too and hasn't run into any problems with it.

Thing is i really want a laptop, but i hate giving my money to this computer companys liek dell , sony . etc....
All they care about is taking money from u and they ll tell u anything in order to succed in theyr mission and once u get the product they totally ignore u.
This is classic human behaviour , the problem with this is that we suckers keep spenging thousands of dollar on this products and at the end of the day all we are is lab rats experimenting theyr new thecnology at our own expenses.
I just recently bought a new car , its a new bmw 5 series and the all thing is practically controlled by a computer. Now immagine if my 72000$ car would start having all kinds of problems, liek it wont start or it shut down , etc... and then i go to bmw and they cant ehlp me? Just immagine how long would bmw last? not much
Insteads this computer companys get away with all sort of **** and they shouldnt.
My first machine was a dell xps m170 and it came with a 1GB memory on it (2 sticks of 512MB) i wanted to upgrade to 2 GB so like a newbie instead of gettign 3rd party memory i called dell. First theyr memory is overpriced to a point that i felt liek they hated me for giving me such a price lol (and im a custumer that bought one of theyr top notch product) on top of that once i finally got the order made they se4nd me the wrong memory , i got pissed called them , i was screaming at one guy telling him how can u make suck a mistake ??? so they apologised and send me new memory. Guess what? again the wrong dam memory lol
I called them and returned the laptop and i still have the memory , they never even asked for it back.
Just to give u an idea with who you are dealing with , a careless company that all they got going for it is good advertising. Look at theyr top of the line desktop , did you see how redicolously overpriced they are ??i can built a better machine for half of that.
What a joke , i might just keep my money and built me a new desktop computer=/

Sorrt for bad english im foreigner P

    @flamehawk

I just got a 6400 with similar specs and I am having the exact same problem!

Did you ever find a solution?

Mine generally does the ati2dvag error about 3 times and then works without issue. (Though occasionally on startup I get garbled screen images and once a pci.sys BSOD). Ive run the dell diagnostics software but all test pass OK!?

I've also dual-booted my machine with Ubuntu and installed the ati drivers and it freezes in a similar way there too, though obviously no BSOD.

    Sigh.

Man, Ubuntu is becoming popular. I run CentOS which is just Red Hat with logo changes. It sounds like the manufacturer has some bugs. Email them, it will help speed up the process by putting pressure on them. I worked for a software company who had a sh*t load of bugs and the complainers got theirs fixed sooner. It is lame that the assh*le complainers get what they want and the nice guys get f*cked

Well it has only gotten worse. I had to restart about 15 times today before I could actually use my darn Notebook.

But never one to call tech support - really unless I want replacements then I know more than they do! I've been scouring interent forums and google...

I stumbled upon this link http://tgnforums.stardock.com/?forumid=274&aid=138443 which seemed to suggest the the catalyst control center (CCC) may be the fault!

So, I have completely removed all the ATI drivers and CCC and installed on the the Dell ATI Driver.

Fingers crossed but so far it is working without issue.

Now this doesn't explain why the same error occurs in linux (unless a form of the CCC is installed with the drivers - i'm not too sure). However, the same person who said CCC may be the issue gave a few indications as to a few options that may also cause problems.

So, I may reinstall CCC on windows at some point (When I have 400 hours to spare) and mess with the options but will also have to see if I can disable those same options in linux somehow...

Ubuntu is popular yes - it was just the closest distro live cd that I had to hand though i'm happy wit it, more so than Mandrake and more so than SUSE. Though I quite like FC5 too. I think I will have to start running CentOS or at least a variant of it - rocks cluster - at work at some point to set up a little parallel processing beowulf cluster! :)

Sigh, there it goes again. FFS!

Looks like it's gonna have to be a call to Dell Support then :(
