I was trying to install the latest driver for my chipset and went to Intel's website. Entered in my information and got the latest download. When I try to install I get this message:

"The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer."

What exactly is going on? I entered in my info correctly (including OS). I have a Dell Inspiron 1525, with a Mobile Intel 965 Chipset. I know there are subdivisions (such as GME965), but this is all the info I can find from device manager. Is there any way to figure out exactly what type of 965 I have? The driver readme gives a list of all supported 965's, but w/o knowing my type it does no help.

And Dell's website did not appear to offer any chipset updates for my cpu.

If you are unsure what chipset you have, try this: Intel Chipset Identification Utility

But what chipset driver are you referring to? The AHCI driver? The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility?

    Is your OS 64 bit?

I will prolly give that a shot.

I'm not sure I understand your follow up question. I just went to the download website, selected chipsets, and was eventually led to the latest version titled: "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Vista32", version 15.9. Says it is for both GM965 and GME965 chipsets. Nowhere was I asked to specify "AHCI" or anything else.

(Edit: My OS is 32-bit, just did a double check)

Uninstall your old driver first, then install then new one. This is for the x3100?

Think so. Can't find that spec on my computer, but supposedly all Inspiron 1525's have it.

Yeah, its built into all the motherboards as the onboard gfx. You can look it up in device manager to see what it is.

Stupid me, I should have checked Intel's website for the meaning behind the message. This is what they say:

Etc, Etc. There are ways to work around the block, but it puts me in a dilemma. Personally, I have very litte faith in Dell providing updated drivers. I'd much rather look to the chip manufacturer for drivers. I can only imagine what "customizations" Dell has made.

i just dled the zip package of the driver, and used the device manager to update the driver.

go to device manager > display adapters > intel gm965 something

double click the entry, a new window will pop up.

select the driver tab > click update driver > click browse my computer for driver > click let me pick from a list of drivers > then click the have disk button > navigate to the folder where you unzipped the driver, select it > and finally click next to install

i've been using that driver for some time and there has been no problems.

Forte, just for the record, where exactly in device manager would I see the x3100 identified? I'm sure I have it, but I looked all through the device manager and never actually saw 'x3100'.

This is something that happens a lot with me when I try to identify components. A driver download will say it is for a certain device, but then the device is never explicitly mentioned in device manager. You just have to look at what info the manager gives you and figure it out (as another example, I think I have a Ricoh R5C833 on my cpu, but damned if I can find it listed). Or maybe I'm just being too anal.
